Sound simple?

I don’t know how come this question will become the hottest thread in CNET user forum. Personally, I do turn off PC to save electricity. But Brian Cooley has different view, and it sound… reasonable.

I know many geeks do not turn off their PCs. What about you?

  • For a dial-up user like me, I have to switch off my PC. :) But actually according to
the Readers' Digest a few months back, it is indeed better to keep it switched on.
Well, apparently the PC is more durable when kept switched on.
  • previously, I had my pc on all the time for days but now with the very hot climate I had to turn it off sometimes, except for the server and router/firewall. With my previous distro, it took about 40 seconds to boot up so that's become one of the reason I'd never shutdown. Now I got 20 seconds for boot, so it's not a big problem anymore. Restarting is not a pain anymore. I'd really love the idea of running it all the time. You can have cron done all the fancy and cool things you would expect. I thought my longest uptime would be 20 days. The only part need to concern is the HD, it's so hot.
  • I use to switch my PC on like forever but soon realise that my room was way warmer then the other room in my home. Switch on the PC only when I need it and the temperature got slightly better.
  • cant say much bout my home pc... still using dial-up ler, so OFF lah! at work? rebooted every
    morning... thats it...
  • Switch that baby off ?!? Hell no ! ... I need to find aliens bub ( seti@home ) !
  • Ya, heat is also a problem and I afraid my 6 year old power supply's fan will stop running suddenly...
Platypus: instead of saerching for aliens, why don't contribute to folding@home? It is more meaningful. :)
  • i don't have a UPS or power surge protector (yes, i know i should, but i'm too lazy lah) so i always switch it off during thunderstorms - i actually had an old pc kena fry after a lightning strike, the hard disk was completely gone and the modem also mampus...
