Singapore: “You Are Fined, Spammer!”
Filed in: Technology, Web — May 30th, 2004
Wow! Wow! This is interesting! Singapore is going to fine spammers on per spam email?!
While it can’t do anything about the mail that comes from outside the country, the government is planning to slap a huge fine on the locals.
The Singapore attorney-general’s office told the Times that new laws could come into effect by early next year. They would force ISPs to take local spam purveyors to the civil court and fine them $S1 to $S0.10 per spam email.
However, in signs that the government may not be thinking this one through properly, they have not said how they expect ISPs to trace the origin of the spam nor how they are expected to enforce any laws that were enacted.
Thought:
First thought: Really good in making money…
Second thought: Knowing that most spammer spoofed its sources, I am waiting to see how Singapore trace the origin of spam mails.
