Your Old PC Can Run Longhorn Too

SEATTLE–Although Microsoft is recommending that computers be pretty modern to fully run the next version of Windows, Longhorn will probably also run on a good number of older machines.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that Longhorn is going to look and run quite differently on those older systems. Computers with a 3GHz processor and 512MB of memory, for example, will get all of the bells and whistles including fancy graphics and the ability to handle multiple video streams. According to its early testing, Microsoft says that older PCs–probably those with as little as 128MB of memory–will be able to run Longhorn, but the OS may not look like it does on a newer, more powerful machine.

So, that means old PC will get ugly looking Longhorn? Why bother to upgrade then?

Anyway, my Pentium3 is definately in the category of unsupported PC. :neutral:

  • If I upgrade to Longhorn I know one of the first things I will do is disable any of their new features. I don't want transparent 3D menus or new theme styles. I want a solid OS without my memory being constantly drained on background processes. You may think the bare OS is ugly, but most computers are used for reasons other than to look pretty.

    It is not a bad option to have, but Microsoft instead could be devoting these programmers obsessed on the visual interface to more important tasks including much needed security enhancements and greater control over the OS (not meaning the appearance) for experienced users. There are huge chunks of 10+ year old source code still present in the OS so I am hardly suprised Windows is riddled with bugs. I am not going to be surprised when I find that Longhorn's system folder contains the ancient 'clock.avi' file.

    It's time they actually did what they claim to do with every new release - build a new version of Windows by starting over. I am not the only person who isn't fooled by these screenshots of visual changes. I know they have scrapped WinFS, so what is different? Auto-updates for bugs that should never have existed and a new security centre to mildly protect the computer from people exploiting Windows holes. But I hope Longhorn proves me wrong. I can dream can't I?

    Longhorn still is the codename and in pre-beta stage. It will only released at year 2006 or later.
  • Won't want to ugrade untul Longhorn it is more stable. Xp is good enough!! Just for me.

    @farking: you are offtopic already. :)

    The BlogAds required at least 160px width, and I do not want to make the template width too big that not readable under 800x600, so the column for categories become smaller.

    The BlogAds do not need to click. Simply place there and they will pay me.
  • nice new template LcF. but one thing bothered me is your column for ads is bigger then column for categories,link..etc..it don't look right..or maybe you want to boost click via the ads? :)
