From now on, you must using legal license of Microsoft Windows before you can download Windows add-ons. Security updates are excepted.

From now on, customers looking to get the latest add-ons to Windows will have to verify that their copy of the operating system is legit.

Beginning Tuesday, the piracy check will be mandatory for all customers worldwide who want to download add-ons for Windows XP.

The only exception is for security-related patches. Regardless of whether a system passes the test, security updates will be available to all Windows users via either manual download or automatic update. The Microsoft Update and Windows Update utilities, which provide notifications of new patches, will require validation.

What does it means?
It means you must have legal Windows license before you can download the free Windows Add-on or softwares from Microsoft. However, you are still able to download security updates even your Windows is pirated version.

Thought:
I don’t think many people care about it… because they do not know that they can get free and good softwares from Microsoft. Oh, they don’t even care/know about the windows security updates! *shrug*

  • I think this is one of the most stupid decision, they ever made. As if it is going to increase their sales? People that care about such stuffs, would just migrate to other OS, if they dont find it cool, with the restriction, I for one, would do that.

One thing i know for sure, is that, the people that are keeping Microsoft still popular, is the pirated copy users not the people paying for the originals. So I think it would be smart if they reconsider that strategy. Because people do not have the money to buy OS softwares, especially with their fat price tags. Just imagine investing around 400 RM just to buy just Microsoft windows. It just wouldnt happen.

  • Now, now, .. gentlemen. What security are you referring to ?. It’s not Microsoft’s fault that some just don’t know where to put the serial numbers for xp. Either I’m doing something right, or Mr. Gates likes me and updates my system now and then.
