Gentoo Linux Founder Quits Microsoft

Microsoft can’t keep Linux geek in its lab?

Daniel Robbins, the founder and former chief architect of the Gentoo Linux project, has quit his job at Microsoft after only eight months, the software giant has confirmed.

“The reason I decided to leave had to do with my specific experiences working in Microsoft’s Linux Lab. Although I believe that the concept behind Microsoft’s Linux Lab is a good one, I wasn’t able to work at my full level of technical ability and I found this frustrating,” he said.

Robbins’s new job is the chief technical officer of ABC Coding Solutions, a company that provides informatin products and consulting services in the health industry.

My two cents

Working with others, especially big company like Microsoft is very different than working on own project. I guess Daniel Robbins did not get enough freedom to do what he wants to do.

    This demonstrated that fundamental freedom to reach the maximum possible in research is very important, and prized, to hit the high gear. Restriction in any form in any lab, in any field, is impeding on the any investment to achieve the most.

    I find it strange why this guy was not allowed to explore all that he can, with computers at MS? MS always hv an option to restrict the code to be released in public domain, y this guy is not allowed to push his limit? Is this the reason that cause MS products to be buggy? Or he was hired not to produce result with linux, so that MS can tell the world that linux sux? Or did he dig too deep in MS products and saw the flaws? or MS worried that he might release the code privately and ms just got to restrict him?

    This also show that politics within MS is eating into what I think MS can do more. Lets see how their release in 2006 turns out.
  • Every company has its own politic to protect the company's benefits. So, no matter how wide a company has, it still has its own limitation on the so-called 'FREEDOM'. Heyy, you can blame the company for seeking its own maximum profits right?

    The only person who doesn't have restiction under company's politic is the owner/CEO of the company. So it's not a news that such great geek left MS.

    Heck! companies like ms is not gaining from inovative capabilities of their staff. In R&D, any possibilities is welcome to go through experimentation. I dun think MS is at their best in giving their client the best. I suppose there is no other purpose to have linux research in MS other than to find the bad point of competitor OS.
  • It is very hard to be creative on 1 OS, when the rest of the firm swears Microsoft OS is the best. Especially when you can look behind the closed doors of Microsoft OS.
