Alang, a successful Malaysian online entrepreneur, wrote a guide to “Selling your website ad spaces by yourselves” (Panduan mudah bagaimana untuk menjual ruang iklan di laman web anda). Here is the translated excerpt.

  1. Prepare a page in your website about the available ad space, e.g: advertise on LiewCF.com
  2. Prepare a contact us form, so that the interested advertisers can contact you.
  3. Promote your ad space for free in related web forums and also website with free advertising space, e.g. iwebtool.com link market
  4. Actively contact any possible advertisers, which can be found in webmaster forums. Make sure your website matches the advertiser’s requirements.

What you say? Would you prefer the 3rd party to handle ads sales for you, or you do it by yourselves?

Of course, you can use both ways at the same time to sell ads. :)

Nice Idea. But small sites won't get much attention
  • but i think it's hard for yourself to value your own site isn't it? how much do you think it'll cost to advertise in liewcf?

Yeah, setting ad price is tricky.

Normally, I will refer to the price in the 3rd party ads network. Find a similar website (PR, traffic, etc) and see how much their ads worth.

I will set a cheaper price for private ad sales, because I saved the commission and can keep a good relationship with the advertisers. Private advertisers usually will renew their ads continuously. :)
  • I have updated my blog with list of tools you can use to determine the price of links/adspace. Read it here http://www.szab.net/blog/2006/07/16/panduan-mud... and get liewcf to translate it for you :p
  • i do both,i think in order to do that you would have to be an active member of popular forums..just to get the diea of how much people are paying for ads..etc...

forums like digitalpoint, sitepoint and namepros are a good place to start.
  • I think your site can sell add space well. Hope you can succeed.
  • good luck with selling adspace liew
