Intel Releases Core 2 Duo Processor for Laptop

CNET Alpha Blog reported that Intel released the laptop version of Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The laptop versions have slower frontside bus (667MHz) compared to desktop versions.

Intel claims that Core 2 Duo is 20% higher performance than current Core Duo processors, but in CNET Lab’s benchmarks, the new processor is only slightly faster in application tests.

My two cents

I see no reason why should we spend much more money for a little better performance. Note that Core Duo has better performance than Core 2 Duo in games tests.

A system architecture has a number of factors driving the performance. Even though the processor is growing faster in theoritical figure, the actual performance could be constrained by other bottlenecks, especially the hard drive performance. You can read more about how hybrid-drive will resolve this bottleneck.

Besides, the OS support is also an issue. Since the new and improved architecture in microprocessor often requires compatible low level system support, only OS and application written to leverage the new functionality will benefit from the boosted architecture.

remember, when you get a laptop with Core 2 Duo, you are actually getting a whole new package with bigger HDD, faster FSB, faster chipsets and faster and larger Ram, so even if the CPU itself does not give you much performance increase, the other periferals does, and today the bottleneck is not on the CPU, but rather the I/Os, so if you buy a new Core 2 Duo laptop, you are definately getting a much faster machine... overall... and it is worth the money...
