Your Dell Hardware Warranty is Running Out!

Last year, I purchased a Dell Inspiron Notebook on behalf of my younger brother. The warranty is expiring. Today, Dell sent me an “Important Notice” about it.

The basic warranty costs RM 449(~USD 130) for a year. That is about 20% cost of a brand new Dell Notebook. I am not sure if my mother wants to pay for the warranty extension.

Most computer makers today make bulk of their profit from services. Warranty services being one of the larger area.

Will I upgrade? depends....

If I had a lot of information on my Laptop then migrating it is going to be a whole headache by itself. I will choose to upgrade my warranty for this.

If it were my gaming machine then I would not renew my warranty but instead sell off what I have now and get a new system.

I'm facing the same dilemma as well. However, for me the warranty is expiring in 2 days... and the link provided in the email for you to renew, doesn't work...Great.

Upgrade it without hesitation. Dell laptop has a 'reputation' of going NUTZ after 1 year of using. Well, at least that applies to me. I bought a 1 year full coverage. The machine works like horse on dope. After 1.5 years, it is as good as dead. :|

Last Summer the warranty on my Dell PC ran out. They mailed me a notice with an offer to purchase an extended warranty. Of course, I did not as I don't need it since my Dell PC including the hardware works just fine.

If the notebook is still in good condition (fast enough for the apps your brother needs), I would renew the warranty. If not, I would get a backup disk such as the Maxtor OneTouch, to backup important data. When the notebook dies, it's time to get a new one. ;-)

What I meant was, if the notebook can still be used without any problem in terms of performance, I'll renew warranty. If not, I'll simply get a new one or use it until it dies (but I don't want it to die with my data so I suggest a backup disk).

Yeah I bought a Maxtor OneTouch III mini edition for backups and transferring files to/from work. The biggest we have here in Malaysia is 100GB.

For a NAS solution maybe you can consider the Maxtor Shared Storage II. I am drooling over the Turbo editions but they are too expensive ;-)

I am considering for a network storage as well for other PCs at home. But I really need a simple backup method for my better half who is less technical. Maybe I should get a OneTouch III USB (full size) next so that backups can be done with a push of a button.

My new Dell laptop will arrive this week..I'm only take 1 year waranty..i'm low on bajet if i took 3 year complete cover..

@sham: do not need to get 3 years complete cover at once. who knows, you might get a new notebook a year later? :)

The most expensive part for a laptop is the LCD panel. Other parts certainly don't worth that kind of price. If your LCD shows sign of going off soon, then worth considering. Otherwise, it is a no for me.

i will not renew it. If the laptop broken, i will get new one. Just backup everything important in this laptop. I rather to get latest version of laptop for better performance. :D

I purchased a waranty for my Dell desktop and paid just $10 for the extended waranty so I'll be two years before it expired.

If I were in your situation, if the laptop was in a good condition and my life depends on it, I'll renew the warranty. Otherwise I'll just let it expire.
