Carlos Slim Helu, the latest World's Richest Man

For the past 13 years, Bill Gates has been known as the richest man in the World. However, the title now is given to Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican businessman in telecommunication industry.

Carlos Slim Helu has a substantial influence over the telecom industry in Mexico. He controls Telmex, Telcel and America Movil companies. Recently, a 27 percent surge in the stock price of America Movil boosted Slim’s wealth to an estimated $67.8 billion compared to $59.2 billion for Bill Gates.

My two cents

How much is $67.8 billion? I doubt I can even write down the numeric figure correctly. Someone said that “when you have a billion dollar, it is only a ‘number’ to you.” I am not sure how truth it is as I haven’t earned a billion. Anyway, both Gates and Slim are not interested in holding the “world’s richest” title.

Would you like to be a billionaire? I don’t.

I mean if Bill Gates doesn't say his wealth then i guess he is just embarassed, because he doesn't want nobody to know.     Being a mexican does not make me feel any pride. Slim may be the richest man in the world, but not in a mexican's heart...after all, he will problably end up dying like the rest of us and where will the money go? being rich is not part of my beleifs and for those of you who may not know...mexicans do have a religion to follow. Abortion is not in our table of comandments.

    I do not understand how a country like Mexico who is home to the richest man in the world and has more billionaires than Switzerland can be characterized as a third world country? How do they justify exporting all its poverty with the expectation of an annual 23 billion dollar return? What sort of changes need to be made to provide schools, living wage jobs and medical assisatance to the less fortunate? If the rich of Mexico don't want to share than the least they could do is put birth control in the drinking water.

    Alot of financial analyst argued that ppl like bill gates and carlos helu, might not be the richest guys for certain. Cos they are industry dependent. If the stock rise, they got richer on paper and the reverse will make them sound poorer. Bear think u guys shd read up Warren Buffet. He is much more diversified. If a specific industry crash, it will impact him very little, cos he is not tied to any industry. Unless the world went into recession and the world's stock market fell like a meteor.... That is why bear think Warren is a true rich guy. Btw... he did not monopolize any industry either. Bear like uncle Warren... hehehe...

    Bill Gates is well known with his Melinda & Gates Foundation. Even though some open source geeks like to label him as a monopoly, he donated almost 30 billions of his profits to find cure for AIDS, scholarships, cure for disease/research and others stuffs.

  • We don't know Bill Gates' real wealth, the figure we know is provided by third party like Forbes, maybe Bill Gates is richer than what we know
