3 Ways to Access Blocked “Malaysia Today”

“Malaysia Today“, a Malaysia political news portal, has been blocked by local ISPs as ordered by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Here are the workarounds to skip the block and access Malaysia Today like normal.

  1. Use the new website address — Malaysia Today has been migrated to a new server and has a new website address (mirror?): http://mt.harapanmalaysia.com/2008/ Simply use the link to access Malaysia Today like normal.
  2. Use proxy server — find a free proxy server and apply it to your system or web browser network setting. Hola! (Read “how to use free proxy with Firefox“)
  3. Use OpenDNS — Stop using local ISPs’ DNS server and switch to OpenDNS, a free DNS service. It is easy to setup, simply follow the OpenDNS setup instruction. Using OpenDNS also skip any ISP level website blocks in the future.


Who is hosting Malaysia Today?

Before the ISP block, Malaysia Today is hosting with ReadySpace, a Singapore hosting company. Ironically, they moved the website to data center in Malaysia (read: tmnet). Check who is hosting any website.

  • I have written a similar notes on how to circumvent internet censorship, and our ideas are more of less the same.

    For proxies, in addition to what you've written, there is this proxy software called Ultrasurf that's developed by the people against internet censorship in China. I find it superb as it's light, easy to use and most importantly, unblockable!

    Basically, Ultrasurf enables users inside countries with heavy Internet censorship to visit any public web sites in the world safely and freely while it automatically searches the highest speed proxy servers in the background.

    Download Ultrasurf software from:
    http://www.ultrareach.com
    http://www.wujie.net/downloads/ultrasurf/u.zip

    Then extract the file and run, that's it.

    If you are using browser other than IE, then you have to manually change your proxy IP address to 127.0.0.1 with port :9666 .

    Say NO to internet censorship!

  • I actually have no interest in politics whatsoever but I was appalled at this latest stupidity by the current govt!

    As a blogger, I feel very much that our rights to freedom of speech has been violated. What happened to the MSC charter?

  • The 'multimedia' bill our government passed during mahathir's time guarantee there would be no internet censorship, this is to attracts foreign companies, especially big internet companies such as Yahoo, Google, ebay to set up their regional base for south east asia.

    Instead, they've chosen Singapore as their base, reason? our government's promises are not trustworthy, remember AFTA? the reduction in tax for cars?

    Its time bloggers like you and me stood up against the corrupt gov.
  • I tried to use OpenDNS, it really help. But, I still cannot access to certain hong kong forum. Too bad... Proxy work, but it load too slow.

    Another way is to use VPN to bypass ISP all together,

    1. The easiest is using the one below, its free easy to install, use and remove, but ad-supported, non-obstructing ads.

    2. Conventional VPN
    www.relakks.com (free 30 days trial, no installation, but every month u need to re-register with a new email address to get further 30 days) etc. My experience with it is.... its hard to get connected.

    But the thing is, it is clearly in MSC Malaysia Bill of Guarantee, item number 7, which states, "Ensure no Internet censorship."

    Hmm... no wonder Dr. M is upset about the censorship...

    Can someone tell me where/ how i can check the domin name or website is block by malaysia? I was so surprised that my website is block by malaysia! It's just a normal business website! How come they can do that as their like only????

    Malaysia-Today is "blocked" again. Could get into the masthead. However, when clicked on any subject, it throws out:
    "You are not authorised to view this resource.
    You need to login."
