Lifehacker asked its readers to vote for their best antivirus programs and picked the 5 top anti-virus software: Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira, ESET NOD32 Antivirus, and AVG.

I was surprised that some famous anti-virus programs are not in the list, such as: Norton, Mcfee, Trend Micro, F-Secure, and Kaspersky.

Personally, I am on Mac and I don’t need any antivirus app but I installed VirusBarrier for Mac to scan files for virus, so that I don’t spread viruses to my PC friends.

If any PC friend asks me, I would recommend AVG Free Antivirus.

For my younger brother, after testing several antivirus programs, he recommends Kaspersky Anti-virus. “It is a very powerful antivirus program, but sometimes too powerful..”, he comments.

  • I'm glad to see Avira making it there. it truly is a super ligthweight AV and for free. I suppose their paid for version might not match up. They should let us donate. Us Avira users.
  • I choose Avira antivirus and I have been using it for a few years without major problem.
  • but I think karspersky 10 more better than this

AVG free version has been my first choice of anti-virus since 2000. I even have friend using it for his server.
  • I got for the 90 days trial for Norton Internet Security and when it expires, I go for Kaspersky trial then move on to McAfee and so on.

    Troublesome? Yes, but its free!
  • Hmm.. after your trial licenses expired, you left no antivirus?
  • I think so like that .
  • i uninstall the old antivirus and install another new antivirus... this way, i get 100% full version antivirus for only 3 months.
  • Oh I see. How about you think AVG ? it is no expired and no need to do so troublesome for you

Kaspersky Internet Security works best. No more monster screeching when virus was found, plus they can dig out almost every unwanted programs, definitely recommended
  • Is it the Kaspersky is need to paid to buy it ? How much the price ?
  • edwardkhoo
Yea, you need to pay for it. If I m not mistaken it's around RM150 for 3 user licenses
  • I think you can get a very good offer during PIKOM PC Fair. Last time I saw is less than RM100 for 3 user licenses.
  • Really ? Did it have any warranted period for 3 user licenses ?
  • i think is because users tend to use "FREE" anti-virus.
  • Some of the free software that virus database update quite late and the feature also less compare with paid software.

    I use Dr.Web.
  • My current choice is Anti-virus software AVG. because it is free one, and then it also provide the update and security of PC detect any virus or unknown things after AVG scanned. What do you think about AVG, Liewcf ?
  • ya, I also recommend AVG to my friends :)
  • I choose AVG!
  • I am also choose the AVG.

i would actually have to differ ... nowadays when we talk bout antivirus, its all bout the free ones ... why would u pay for one when there is so many free ones out there? free and non-intrusive - i would have to say avast for now ...

and whle we are on this topic, ms should actually foot the av bill or they comes up with something which works ...

its like use my os, but its susceptible to attacks, and for that u buy some av ...
