Picasa for Linux runs the current Windows version of Picasa using a carefully tested version of Wine, an open-source implementation of the Windows application-programming interface (API). Wine runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix. But it’s not a Windows emulator; instead, it provides a Windows API middleware layer that enables Windows programs to run on Linux without the slowing effects of OS emulation or a virtual machine.

Daniel Robbins, the founder and former chief architect of the Gentoo Linux project, has quit his job at Microsoft after only eight months, the software giant has confirmed.

“The reason I decided to leave had to do with my specific experiences working in Microsoft’s Linux Lab. Although I believe that the concept behind Microsoft’s Linux Lab is a good one, I wasn’t able to work at my full level of technical ability and I found this frustrating,” he said.

Microsoft has done what could have once been considered unthinkable: It has begun to support Linux in its products. In a keynote speech given at the Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas, CEO Steve Ballmer laid out the company’s plans to expand its virtualization software to support other platforms, including Linux.

Microsoft’s Virtual Server leverages Windows Server 2003 as a platform for running multiple operating systems on a single machine, each insolated from one another. Windows Server 2003 is the “host” OS that can be configured to run virtual machines for “guest” operating systems, including Windows NT and 2000, OS/2 and Unix.

Australian company Cybersource says it’s currently talking to two domestic banks about providing Linux-based bootable CDs to consumers to ensure Internet banking security.

The company yesterday released information about its Online Banking Coastguard solution. Coastguard is based upon Knoppix, a Linux distribution which boots entirely from CD and is known for its automatic hardware detection features. Cybersource has included Mozilla Firefox as the sole browser for Internet banking.

That’s good idea to give bank customers a custom build Linux live CD. The cost for each Live CD is only the cost of the CDROM, because most Linux distro(Knoppix, in this case) is free.

User just need to insert the CD and start PC, it will auto load Linux, open browser(Firefox) and goto the bank’s website. No installation required. No setup required. No modify on hardisk. Trouble free, risk free and secure!

Secure, because it runs Linux, Firefox and is Live CD. Spyware and Adware cannot be installed. Phishing is less possible. Most importantly is that a Live CD does not leave any track on the computer. This is especially important to protect sensitive data, like online bank account login.

P/S: Beside the well known Knoppix Live CD, there are MANY other Linux Live CDs.

This article by a PhD student at Shanghai JiaoTong University (SJTU) Research Institute of Robotics describes an RTLinux-powered robot that placed fifth in the most recent RoboCup competition. The robot has two color cameras for visual sensing along with a laser range finder (LRF) for goalkeeper location, and a wireless LAN allows communication among the robots on SJTU’s team. SAN FRANCISCO–Improvements to Linux have led Intel to permit Linux laptops to sport the Centrino brand for the first time.

Centrino is the chipmaker’s brand name for a three-part package for mobile computers: the Pentium M processor, a supporting chipset and a wireless chip. Although Linux can run on existing Centrino notebooks, Intel until now wouldn’t permit companies to sell Linux laptops using the Centrino logo.

The reason for the change: With the release of the 2.6.8 Linux kernel, the open-source operating system’s power management abilities now meet Intel’s requirements for Centrino notebook battery life, said Karen Regis, manager of mobile programs and promotions at the chipmaker.

iRiver has formally introduced its Linux-based Portable Media Player (PMP) family in the UK. The device maker also said this week that it has cut the price of its H series colour digital music players.

The PMP-120 and PMP-140, each equipped with a 20GB and a 40GB 1.8in hard drive, respectively, provide MP3, ASF, WMA and WAV audio playback, along with MPEG 4, AVI, DivX and XviD video support. There’s still photography storage and slide-show features, too, and the machines also provide an FM radio and voice recording facilities.
