The message warned me that my online banking account will be terminated if do not “secure” it by following the link.

WE ARE IMPROVING OUR ACCOUNT SECURITY TO PROTECT AND SERVE YOU BETTER. ALL CUSTOMERS ARE REQUIRED TO IMMEDIATELY SECURE THEIR ONLINE ACCOUNT BELOW AS UNSECURED ACCOUNTS WILL BE TERMINATED TILL FURTHER NOTICE. THIS PROCESS IS MANDATORY.

Of course, it is a scam.

How did I know it is a scam?

• The email is not sent from official site, in this case: Maybank2u.com
• Bank will NEVER send email to customer regarding account problem.
• The link is not official site.
• No contact information included in the message.

Most modern web browsers nowadays also automatically block suspicious website.

However, people might still get cheated if they happen to receive the scam email right after they done an online transaction. That’s quite tricky.

Always be alert.

Techcrunch hacked, again

Reported by TheNextWeb, TechCrunch has been hacked again and the hacker inserted the following text (no censor) in the site’s header:

“So Arrington, how much did all the media coverage yesterday brought you in trough the welcome.html ad you forced people to? What a fucking retarded move was that you twat. You should be thanking me and sucking on my fucking ballsack for not deleting everyone on the box and publishing the mysql, if that’s what you want O.K, I can do that. Also, you fucking dickwads from sites like Yahoo!, BBC and plenty more, where the FUCK do you see adult content on http://dupedb.com/ ???????? I mean honestly, are you fucktards also in just for the money?!?!?!”

Apparently, the hacker is angry over the TechCrunch decision to put up the interstitial ad.

TechCrunch is back to normal, once again. Hope it will stable from now on. It is not a good idea to have the popular tech site hacked while Apple announce the Apple Tablet few hours later.

The hacked TechCrunch site contains a text “what a fxxxing useless hack isn’t it. Bleh.” and a link to dupedb.com, illegal download site.

Well, here is another update of WordPress 2.8 (23 days after the 2.8.5 upgrade), the WordPress 2.8.6 Security Release.

Today I received my first ever spam message in my Facebook Inbox from a friend’s Facebook account. Have you received similar spam message before?

The multiple recipients message with a subject line “hey” and the message body is:

The bit.ly short URL redirected to an error page with text

“Traffic Back URL not using.”

Seems like the spam page has been removed. The domain name “bestdatingdirect.com” looks like a dating site. But visit the root domain page, only shows a online contact form.

Although the Facebook spam message does not do any harm to me, but it means that Facebook Inbox messages is no longer spam-proof.

Do NOT follow any website link that you do not know, even if it is sent by your best friend!

The simplest way to check is by sending a reply message and ask your Facebook friend to confirm about the website link sent to you.

While Mozilla Firefox celebrates its 5th birthday, Cenzic, an application security vendor, claims that the Mozilla Firefox led the field of Web browsers in terms of total vulnerabilities.

This is certainly not a good news for Mozilla.

According to Cenzic, Firefox accounted for 44 percent of all browser vulnerabilities reported in the first half of 2009. In contrast, Apple’s Safari had 35 percent of all reported browser vulnerability, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was third at 15 percent and Opera had just six percent share.

Does it make Firefox a dangerous web browser?

The Firefox plug-ins are one of the main reasons of the vulnerabilities. Mozilla launched a plug-in checker in Oct 2009 to address the problem.

Ironically, while Firefox has the most vulnerabilities, Cenzic themselves use Mozilla technology within its own solutions.

For iPhone/iPod Touch users. The first ever iPhone worm has been discovered in Australia. The infected iPhones will have their wallpaper changed to an image of Rick Astley.

The wallpaper has an message “ikee is never going to give you up”.

The worm is capable of breaking into jailbroken iPhones if their owners have not changed the default password after installing SSH.

Once the worm breaks in, it will find the other iPhones in the mobile phone network with similarly vulnerable and spread itself to them again.

Anyway, your iPhone is safe if you haven’t jailbreak it or have not installed SSH.

You must always change your root user password if you have jailbroken you iPhone or iPod Touch, and installed SSH.

Yes, WordPress just released another update — WordPress 2.8.5. Everyone should upgrade your WordPress blog to the latest version. Why?

The latest release will secure and protect your WordPress blog from hackers. It is not 100% bullet proof but hardening your blog security.

Here are the highlights in the new release:

• A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
• Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
• Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
• Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

How to upgrade WordPress, the easy way

My first choice would be the WordPress Automatic Upgrade.

When you see the WordPress upgrade notification on WordPress Admin (you might need to logout and login to see it), just follow the instruction to do the automatic upgrade.

However, some web hosting company does not support the automatic upgrade feature…

If that’s your case, then you can FTP upload and replace the modified files since the WordPress 2.8.4 (and only 2.8.4!).

Lastly, you need to download the complete WordPress installation set, unzip it, upload and replace your existing WordPress files, then run the upgrade script (/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php).

Kaspersky Lab is offering free malware scan at the Kaspersky “Kung Fu” Virus Lab at PC Fair 2009 (II) to set a new record in the Malaysia Book of Records.

The record attempt will take place over three days between 11.00am and 8.00pm, from 31 July to 2 August in Room 306 on the 3rd floor of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

When Jackie Chan meets Kaspersky

Talking about Kaspersky “Kung Fu” Virus Lab, Jackie Chan did a commercial ad with the company’s owner, Eugene Kaspersky.

The story is similar to Jackie’s previous movie “The Tuxedo” where Jackie wears a Kaspersky helmet and karate kicks viruses on a Segway in the cyberworld.

Quite amusing, I must admit.

I received an email which appears to be sent from Facebook Team and giving me a huge 80% discount on viagra, cialis, etc.

Of course, that’s another spam mail. It cloned the Facebook email’s template and embedded the viagra sales ad. Hey, they even accept credit card online!

The viagra ad links to a e-commerce website with .cn (china) domain, which is registered by a China man. While I am writing this, I tried to “get more info” about their viagra products, the website has gone.

My two cents

Spam mail like this is very obvious. However, if the receiver happens to be interested in buying viagra online, he might be yet another victim.

The spam mail was not sent to my valid facebook email address. They just simply mass seny.

Considering Facebook has more than 250 million active users, I am not surprised that the viagra e-commerce site got some sales (even taken down in a short period).

Disclaimer: I am absolutely sure that I don’t need to buy viagra (yet?).

These few days, I have received many spam messages from my windows live messenger contacts. The message contains a hyperlink (appears to link to an image).

The link goes to a page showing a “DATE MY IM” form, asking your msn email and password.

Well, it looks almost exactly the same as “Pics for MSN Friends“, which I previously wrote about.

Same trick, but never fails to work. *sigh*

If your friend is sending you the similar message, please ask them to change windows live password.

“Never give your password to anyone. No one from Windows Live Mail will ever ask you for your password.” (via http://help.live.com/)

Recently, I am getting strange URL from my MSN friends. Clicking the link will lead to a “Pics for MSN Friends” web page with a login form asking for your msn email and password. DO NOT submit it!

Do not fall into the trap! If you submit your email and password, they will use your MSN account to send messages to your friends on your behalf.

Quote from the “pics for MSN friends” site:

We may temporarily access your MSN account to do a combination
of the following:
1. Send Instant Messages to your friends promoting this site.
2. Introduce new entertaining sites to your friends via Instant Messages.

That’s scary!

There is a Terms of Use / Privacy Policy at the bottom of the page. Basically, it tells you that they have the right to use your MSN account to spread unwanted messages. The page appears to be created by “TST Management, Inc”

There are many variants of the URL but all have the same login form. For more information on terms and conditions of the page, please refer to the great write-up of Jalaj.

What happens if I submitted the form?

Your MSN friends will probably get the same URL from your account and thought it is from you. They might be the next victims and then send the same URL to the friends of your friends…

What should I do?

In order to stop the unauthorized access to your MSN account, you should change your MSN Passport account’s password, in other word, change your Hotmail password.

My two cents

Never ever submit your account information to an unknown website. Don’t trust the links from your instant messaging friends. They might not know what happened. It is good to confirm with them about the link they sent.

It is quite common that mod_security is interfering the functions of your web applications. mod_security is installed and enabled by your web server admin but you can still disable it for your individual website using .htaccess file by following this tutorial.

“mod_security is an Apache module (for Apache 1 and 2) that provides intrusion detection and prevention for web applications.” — HowtoForge

Disable mod_security in .htaccess file

1. If you do not have one yet, an .htaccess file in the folder of your web application
2. To disable mod_security COMPLETELY, add the following line to the .htaccess file:
   SecFilterEngine Off
   OR, to disable HTTP POST scanning only, use the following instead:
   SecFilterScanPOST Off
3. Save the file and test your web application to check whether disabling mod_security has solved your problem.

I recommend you to try SecFilterScanPOST Off first, instead of disabling mod_security completely.

My two cents

mod_security is good to protect your website but it might cause some problems for certain web applications, especially in file uploads. My server has mod_security enabled and I encountered WordPress upload error: “HTTP error”. The SecFilterScanPOST Off solved the problem immediately.

If your MSN Messenger / Windows Live Messenger contact offers you some pics, and sends you a zip file with filename like “imageXX.zip” where “XX” is 2 digit number… DO NOT ACCEPT IT!

Your MSN contact’s computer has been infected by MSN Worm and send you the virus without their acknowledgment!

My IM has been set to auto accept incoming file from contacts (using Mac, no worry ). Recently, I got the zip file a few times from my MSN friends as soon as they appeared online. In the zip file, there is an executable file with filename like “imageXX.JPG-www.photobucket.com” (XX is random digit, e.g. image80.JPG-www.photobucket.com).

Most people will think that the ending “.com” is part of the website address. Wrong. The “.com” means “Command”, which is a file extension of Windows executable file.

If you run the “imageXX.JPG-www.photobucket.com” file, the MSN Worm will be installed on your computer, and then separate to your MSN contacts and so on…

As you see, the messages basically means “Hey, here is my pics!”. Since the message is sent out by your MSN contact (you trust them!), people will easily get cheated.

MSN worm removal method

There are many variants of the MSN worm. Many antivirus in the market fail to detect the MSN worm. I found 2 manual virus removal methods for the MSN worm variant at HERE and HERE.

The removal instruction is not difficult though. It takes 3 steps to remove the MSN worm.

1. Delete registry entry of the MSN worm under
   [code]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run[/code]
   (the registry entry is different according to the variant)
2. Restart computer
3. Delete virus files found in System folder and Temp folder (the virus files is different according to the variant).

Please note that wrongly editing registry entries could damage your Windows system. Users are advised to get help from expert to remove the virus manually.

How to keep your computer safe?

There are few things you can do to keep your computer free from virus and worm:

• Has an updated antivirus running all the time
• Do not accept incoming files, whenever possible.
• Scan every downloaded/incoming file with an updated antivirus
• Scan every external file storage device (hard disk, USB flash drive, memory card, etc) as soon as it plug into your computer.
• Run full system virus scan weekly
• Dump Windows, switch to Mac or Linux.

At his or her core, a true hacker is someone who is curious and wants to learn how systems work. This can and of course at Microsoft is done in an ethical, legal manner. We employ “white hat hackers” who spend their time pentesting and code reviewing applications and software looking for weaknesses and vulnerabilities so that others don’t once we’ve released that code into the wild. We employ many many smart testers who know more about some of our software then perhaps the architects who designed it. We also employ some of the top researchers in their industry, dedicated people working on the bleeding edge of whats going to be common place in the next 5 or 10 years of computing. So yes, Microsoft does have hackers, and its time to introduce you to some of them and show you what it is, exactly that they do.

The discontinued AVS was using Kaspersky antivirus engine. Kaspersky Antivirus is the CNET Editor’s Choice Antivirus. We are not sure why AOL dumps Kaspersky and switched to McAfee.

The special edition of McAfee VirusScan Plus is an all-in-one security package with antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware. It is free of charge but required a valid AOL username. You can register an account for free.

My two cents

I tried to register an AOL account to download the McAfee VirusScan Plus but got an error “Sorry! We’re unable to complete your product registration at this time.”
