Simpler Google

March 30th, 2004 | Category: Google, Technology, Web | 1 Comment

… but still powerful.

I am sure you have notice something different about Google’s website design recently. The simple original design has become even simpler now!

Can’t see the different? Take a look at previous Google screenshots and compare with the current design. :)

There is additional more >> link for easy access to Google’s other services, each with a rather cute icons. However, it has removed “Directory” search link from the main page(accessible by follow the “more >>” link).

No more google toolbar image at the bottom of search result. Yeah!

DSL Light Is Not Blinking, Finally…

March 29th, 2004 | Category: Tmnet | 4 Comments

Hmmm… seems like my Streamyx line is okay already. It has no disconnect(except manually reconnected by me) since Sunday afternoon. :D

Though the technician has yet to check it at my home, the line is okay now. Even I purposely disconnected it, it will reconnect back without problem(Man, I was really worry that it will not reconnect back!).

Conclusion? The problem is at Tmnet side and they have fixed it.
What was the problem actually? No idea…

However, I prefer not to put 100% trust on the line yet. Give it another 24 hours, if ok then ok. Else, still have to call the technician.

Wish me luck!

P/S: The line is connected at 288kbps now, which is rather low for 512k package.

Replace Notepad by Disable Windows File Protection

March 28th, 2004 | Category: Microsoft, Tips n Tricks | 4 Comments

Frankly speaking, Window’s Notepad is sux. It cannot open big text file and VERY limited function(got function meh?)

Therefore, I always use MetaPad as my default text editor instead of Notepad. Metapad is small and fast, complete with useful functions. The ideal notepad replacement.

Due to the Windows File Protection of Microsoft Windows 2000/XP, replace the default Notepad with program of your choice is not as easy as you think.

MetaPad website has instructions to do that on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. However, the Windows 2000 tip does not work for me. (Windows XP tip works, I tried in my office. :P )

So, here is LcF’s way to replace Windows 2000 (works with SP4) Notepad(and other Windows protected files as well, maybe).

Say “No” to Word Attachment

March 28th, 2004 | Category: Open Source | 2 Comments

You sent the attachment in Microsoft Word format, a secret proprietary format, so I cannot read it. If you send me the plain text, HTML, or PDF, then I could read it.

Sending people documents in Word format has bad effects, because that practice puts pressure on them to use Microsoft software. In effect, you become a buttress of the Microsoft monopoly. This specific problem is a major obstacle to the broader adoption of GNU/Linux. Would you please reconsider the use of Word format for communication with other people?

Thought:
When I was applying job, there are companies stated that you MUST attach resume to email in MS Word format…
