PalmOne Treo 650 Smartphone

…the smart-phone update has a higher-resolution screen and a faster processor than the previous top-of-the-line model, the Treo 600.

Additions include a removable battery and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. An improved VGA camera promises to work better in low-light situations and to record video as well as still images.

Overall, though, PalmOne felt that it had found the right design for its smart phone with the Treo 600, product manager Michelle White said. The 650 is similar in design to its predecessor but is slightly curvier and has a new keyboard with flatter keys.

The Defense Ministry of Singapore, the latest government agency to spurn Microsoft for open source, said this week that it’s turning to the OpenOffice application suite rather than updating Microsoft Office.

According to the Bloomberg news service, the agency is installing the for-free OpenOffice suite on new PCs replacing older models. The decision to go open-source was made, said Cheok Beng Teck, the director of the office of the ministry’s chief information officer, because “the additional features [of Microsoft Office 2003] could not justify the high cost.”

The ministry will hold on to copies of Microsoft Office 97 it already licenses, and give users a choice of which suite they choose use, Cheok said.

Get Pay by Receiving Spams

October 26th, 2004 | Category: Web | No Comments

A user can block all spam, or opt in to the payment system. Affini members won’t pay to send messages, but will have the right to charge a fee for receiving a message from anybody outside the network — individual or commercial sender alike. If the recipient so chooses, he can waive the fee and also invite the sender into the network. At some point, Affini will allow users to alter the initial fee, allowing them to charge a dollar, for example, to receive unsolicited mail. However, market forces will also limit the number of advertisers who will want to pay such rates, Chang noted.
