Firefox Bookmark Lost

Filed in: Mozilla — February 3rd, 2005

My office PC was improper shutdown yesterday, when I launched Firefox this morning I found that the bookmarks are all lost!

Restarted browser, bookmarks no recover.
Restarted PC, bookmarks no recover, too.
Checked Firefox profil, even the bookmark backup(bookmarks.bak) is empty!
Tried Windows XP system restored, no sign of bookmarks after restoration…

Bookmarks certified lost at 3 Feb 2005 morning.

Fortunely, those bookmarks are not so critically important. They just save me few key strokes on keyboard. To prevent the similar problem happen again, I installed TWO Firefox bookmark plugins:

  • Bookmark Backup — automatic save bookmark copy to your desire location everytime Firefox close.
  • Bookmarks Synchronizer — let you connect to an FTP/WebDAV server and synchronize your bookmarks. Sync on Firefox startup/close options are available.

Hope this helps other Firefox to save their bookmarks. :)

P/S: When I search for firefox recover lost bookmark, I found my OWN site at #2! Duh… that’s ironic.

    OH GHOSH !!!!

It happened to me exactly the same. it shut down unexpectedly and poof, all gone.

restart after restart, restore over restore. digging folder after folder for bookmark file. none helps.

which make me very, seriously mad.

my bookmarks are aka my knowledge/experience on the net. years of surfing, picking good sites comes to an end.

i then wonder why would they(the firefox development team) put the bookmark as a single file ? why not organizing them just like IE ? shortcuts in folder. its easier, saving, easier to manipulate and more. i wonder why.

Firefox makes his own backups you can find them on:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\something.default\bookmarkbackups

Firefox is one of the best web browsers not like IE
