The Malaysia Bloggers Forum is Coming Soon!
Filed in: Malaysia, Weblog — March 1st, 2005
As a result of my previous post about a forum for Malaysia bloggers, I have registered a two domain names and created a web hosting account for it.
I will create a forum(powered by phpBB) for the website, scheduled to be done in this week. If you have any suggestion(topic, must-have feature, phpBB mod, etc), please let me know in your comment. It would be nice if anyone can contribute a logo design for the website.
Oh. The website is MalaysiaBloggers.com. (Singular domain name, MalaysiaBlogger.com, is registered as well.)
Thought:
I am not sure that am I doing the right thing or not… Maybe I should not be the one who create the website. Hopefully, with support of fellow bloggers, the forum will success in building a community for local bloggers.

I think this is a good idea. I’m a forumer in mypdacafe and lowyat.net, but those are basically more tech oriented forum. A more life-oriented forum like this might open up a better discussion zone for malaysians (or more).

I would suggest you to use SimpleMachineForum, SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org)

phpBB has a bad reputation now. u should consider another BB. how bout the unofficial release of bbpress which is lite and simple.
March 2nd, 2005 at 12:28 pm
bbpress originated from miniBB. I personally using one now (miniBB). the thing i like is i can integrate the forum user & auth table with my own portal user & auth table.
March 2nd, 2005 at 12:50 pm
i use punbb. also lite and faster than phpbb.
March 2nd, 2005 at 2:06 pm
Good idea. I’ll be joining the forum as soon as it’s open.

phpBB has big supporting groups. Though it has serious exploit previously, but the developing team fixed them already.
bbpress or minibb is nice to integrate into existing website. But I don’t see it is suitable for standalone forum.
punBB is fast but less features.

well, i’ve only got a forum up for two months or so, so i shouldn’t really comment, but it’s been a very enlightening process. i didn’t expect limteh.com to consume 5 times (!!!) the amount of the data transfer sixthseal.com generates (about 80-100 GB due to the media and traffic).
i had to use my entire paycheck (3k) to pay for the server and bandwidth bills, and i was rather concerned at the skyrocketing data transfer that the forum generates per month that i had to switch several SMTP servers (phpBB’s Private Message, auto email notification etc is a killer - i basically did a mail server tango to balance the load a bit…but that also lead to slowdowns coz the streamyx mail servers (which i had to use) was nowhere near as fast as my server.
also, it’s hard for me to maintain two sites (tried and failed with castitas.com) due to the long hours at work, so i could not be as involved in the forum as i wanted to be due to a lack of time and a stronger commitment to the main blog. i’m not sure how you want to plan to manage yours, but i decided to let forum moderators take over…seems to be the trend in most forums.
i try to keep the moderators happy as they contribute a lot of time and effort, so i give back equally. however, it can be very nice when people send money to help with the bandwidth bills, i think it’s really big of them to do that. generous…
i’ve only been around as a forum admin for a while, but yeah, it can be fun…lots of interaction, much more than a blog.
but the main blog is still the main blog for me…
hope it goes well for you! all the best!
p/s - i thought about purchasing the very same domains about a year or so ago, but i was deterred by the possible permutations e.g. malaysianblog.com etc. that was part of why i didn’t go for it coz it would take too much to snap up all the permutations (the other reason being the visitor’s country of origin of my blog, which is mostly from US, Aus etc). the main reason is coz i really am adverse to permutation heavy domains…
personally, i’ve been lusting after the hailat.com domain for years. i don’t know why i want it, i guess it’s just the most common expletive in my previous company, and i like the translation. it’s on my backorder list…but i never can get it. oh well. maybe this year.
again, all the best in your forum…

@killuminati: thank you for taking time on comment. Glad to know that limteh.com is so successful. perhaps you can get webhosting company to sponsor the forum?
I just provide a platform for local bloggers. I have no plan to manage the forum by my own. Definately need fellow bloggers to keep the forum active.
The reason I register both plural and singular domain name is very simple, just to prevent the grammer typo.
Thank you. But it is not my forum.

agreed with zeo.. how about IPB? better IMO
March 4th, 2005 at 3:58 am
@farking: IPB is not free, too. Anyway, I am getting donator for vbulletin. I think it is one of the best forum script nowadays.
March 4th, 2005 at 8:10 am
If you got a donator, ask him whether can get IPB or not. IPB is better than vB.

again, i will still give my vote to SimpleMachines. Take a look at its list of features. I think it should be a good choice for open source forum script.

Thanks for the features link, lengct.
Ya, SimpleMachine is nice open source forum. I just installed it yesterday for testing.
