Download Full Internet Explorer 6 SP1 Standalone Installer
Filed in: Microsoft, Tips n Tricks — April 2nd, 2005

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 use live installation method. The installation software will connect to the Microsoft server and download required files. You need to stay online during the whole installation. It does not leave installation files* after setup completed.
Is there any way to download the setup files only but not install it?
Yes, you can actually download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 setup files for later installation (or install on other PC).
Steps:
- Download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 setup file (480KB), and save in a folder where you want to keep the whole setup files. Here I use »
c:\\download - Click Start > Run… , enter the following command line in the field provided.
c:\\download\\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d:1 /s:""#E" - The IE setup will launch. After accept the agreement, you are provided the Download Options as follows.
Here you can choose where do you want to store the setup files and download setup files for which Windows version.
- Click Next button and it will start download the setup files, without install. Done!

My two cents
After cleaning the spywares/adwares of my office PCs, I usually will do the Windows Update as well. Since most of them are Windows9x running IE5, it will took long time to download IE6 for each PC… By saving setup files in my PC, I just need to access the files through LAN and setup their IE6.
P/S: Though using broadband Internet connection, but downloading the same files (12MB) for each PC is definately not fun.

Hi,
Kudos to you for this.
Need to get IE6 onto a computer that only has dialup.
Why can’t MS provide a link to let you get the whole thing?
Thanks again.

I have a dilemma.
Where I am, the only computer that has internet access is a mac. I want to download the latest version of IE for my PC that is offline to test some web sites that I am creating.
Any suggestions? This doesnt work for me, since I cannot run the installer on the mac…
I need the whole stand alone version to download on the mac and transfer and run on the PC.
September 25th, 2005 at 12:04 pm
For Mac user, the latest IE version you can get is IE 5 fo Mac. Microsoft stopped the IE development for Mac.

Thank you for your tip! After a lot of frustration at trying to install a wireless card that required IE 5.5 or above (what genius at linksys thought of requiring that when you are trying to network a computer that was offline), I tried your advice and it worked. Thank you!
January 18th, 2006 at 4:59 am
the direct command did not workek (error messages on windows XP) so
I was able to download in parts.
First run in the download directory (I did it via the MSDOS window)
ie6setup /C
Thuis will bring the first files, including ie6wzd.
The run
ie6wzd /d:1
which will bring the rest of the installation files.
the option /s#E made it fail (what is this option by the way??)

Thank you very much… I needed to install SBS 2000, and the anti-virus needs the IE5.5 (it comes with IE5.0). First time i tried to windows update before install anti-virus!!!! I imediatly got a lot of virus…
The only solution is installing IE 6.0, then anti-virus, and then windows update.

Since u installed newer IE7, Windows won’t allow you to downgrade to IE6. Try to uninstall IE7 first before install IE6.
April 9th, 2006 at 5:59 pm
Thanks for the info, it works fine. However I still have a problem: this instruction downloads the English IE6. I would need another language (Hungarian). Could you please help me how to download it? I tried to change the language in the setup file, but after entering the command line command it still downloaded the English version… Would appreciate your help.
Have a nice day.

Thanks, the information was very helpful. What I would like to know is how do you learn all this stuff. I guess it’s just because you are more persistent than I.
June 11th, 2006 at 2:51 pm
Thank you because I have a Windows 2000 Adv. Server Disk but now
I am planning to integrate all security, freeware, software, and regular updates to my operating system cd.
That way I won’t have to worry about doing all this rebooting, downloading, and installing all these updates, security updates, and programs.
Also I won’t ever have to keep validating my windows operating system over and over again because I integrating the downloads. They need a special program where if you validate your OS on your MSN account just sign in and no re-validationg.
My server will be secure the minute I use my Operating System. No more worrying about security. I will just install, set up my server, and forget.
Peace of mind!:)

@Tony Mancini
You can use the /q switch to do a quiet install. This will bypass the dialog that comes up when you already have a later version of IE.
November 7th, 2007 at 9:12 pm
well you can download the files if you have IE6, i downloaded the offline installer in a machine with XP SP2
December 17th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
This works well. I am on dialup and have several computers. I sure did not want to go thru this more than once. It will get burned on a CD now.
One problem. You have an error in that string to enter. You have:
#
c:downloadie6setup.exe /c:”ie6wzd.exe /d:1 /s:”"#E”
It should read:
#
“C:\Download\ie6setup.exe” /c:”ie6wzd.exe /d:1 /s:”"#E”
In other words the slash after the word download is missing.
When I copied and pasted the line, it would not run. Then I noticed the error.
Now if only I could understand why MS does not just have an option to just download the whole file.
I will assume this will work on any download of this kind, by just changing the file name.
George
If you reply by email, you may have to send it a second time (to verify) because of my spam blocker.
December 17th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
thank you, George. The slashes error was due to wordpress auto parsing script to remove the security concerned characters.

IE6 Full Install
I have an old IBM600e, running W98SE, that I use for testing out websites on a local testbed server. The machine is not connected to the Internet. To check stuff out I needed Internet Explorer 6.
There are several sites, including Micrososft’s that tell you how to get IE6 onto you machine. However all of them required the machine to be online. These instructions were also found on sites that said to do it this way and not be online as well. Needless to say none of them worked.
A complete, full installer for IE6.0 can be found here: http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/6.0
Click the ie60.exe link and it takes you to a selection of mirrors to download from. Pick one and download the file It’s a 77mb download. I downloaded it with a connected PC to a flash stick then stuck it into my 600e.
Double clicking the ie60.exe file expands the exe file into folder named IE 6.0 FULL (checked it for viruses - none).
OpenED that folder and double click ie6setup.exe and it installED Internet Explorer 6 on the Thinkpad.
I am running it no problem and have burned the IE 6.0 FULL folder with its contents to a CD for future use.

Hi
I put the file in the root, running XP SP3, ie 7.0 5730 13
It does load the eula, but then fails (unable to load the required components), , So I tried with /q, still fails.
C:\ie6setup.exe /c:”ie6wzd.exe /d /s /q:”"#E”
