SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday that the next version of its Office software will use Internet-friendly XML technology as the default file format for documents created in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The new format will make it easier for other programs to read Office documents, an improvement the software titan says is aimed at boosting workers’ productivity.

The new format will make it easier for other programs to read Office documents

Does the “other programs” included open source office suites like OpenOffice.org? I doubt so.

Microsoft will not open its XML schema or DTD to public. At the end, you still need to use Microsoft or its partner softwares to read the XML Office documents.

It is easier for Microsoft and related softwares to read the Office documents, not for its competitors(read: open source softwares).

Well… It is BUSINESS!
