Remove Email Virus in Thunderbird Mbox

July 28th, 2005 | Category: Downloads, Tips n Tricks | 7 Comments

My Mozilla Thunderbird received an email with netsky virus attachment this morning. The Antivir detected it but cannot clean the virus…

It popup a message saying that the virus is detected but cannot remove it due to it is inside mbox. Then, whenever I other uninfected email in the Thunderbird, the same message popup again. Deleted the infected email and clear the “Trash” folder do not help either.

I decided to try another free antivirus software - AVG Free Edition. Installed, run auto Internet update, launched Thunderbird…

AVG detected the email virus and cleaned it! Easy and fast! The AVG auto scan incoming and outgoing emails without need to configure software settings.

I am considering to dump AntiVir and pick up AVG… AVG support scanning specified folders, better email scanning support but use more system memory(few MB more than AntiVir).

What is your choice of antivirus software for email?

Some antivirus softwares may delete Thunderbird if virus found(because all emails are in one mbox file). Read MozillaZine ThunderBird FAQ for details.

G-Force - the great visualization plugin for your media players

July 28th, 2005 | Category: Downloads, Reviews | No Comments

G-FORCEI got a chance to try out the G-Force Platinum version. Here I share my small review of the visualization software.

What is G-Force?

G-Force is a music visualization plug-in for media players that also visualizes auxiliary or “line-in” audio. G-Force features fast anti-aliased effects, millions of possible visual combinations, savable and scriptable effects, and unparalleled expandability.

Frankly, I do not use any visualization for any of my media player. Not that I do not like the special fancy effect when listening music, but my old computer(PIII 450MHz) and graphic card(Nvidia TNT2) just cannot meet the system requirement of major visualization plugins. :S

When I get the copy of G-Force, I am wondering if I need to install it on my brother’s faster computer. Fortunately, I do not.

I install G-Force Platinum on my old computer and — surprisingly — it runs very smooth! There is no lagging of visualization even in full screen mode! Wow!

I am impressed.

Netscape 8.0.3.1 Patched Two Security Flaws

July 27th, 2005 | Category: Mozilla | No Comments

The Netscape 8.0.3.1 update repairs two security flaws in Firefox, the open-source browser on which Netscape is based. The first fixes a hole found in several media players, such as Flash and Quicktime, and how they open Javascript URLs within the browser.

Before the patch, these could be exploited to run malicious code that collects personal information such as login cookies or passwords. The other fix focuses on shared function objects, which could allow Web content scripts to locate a privileged object and then execute malicious code.

Download Netscape browser

Thought:
One of my friend prefer Netscape than Firefox, the main reason is because using Netscape do not need to open another program when he want to check emails. If using Firefox, he needs to open Thunderbird to check emails. By the way, we can access email client in Firefox via Tools -> Read Mail.
