Filed in: Linux — September 8th, 2005
Ubuntu is giving away installation CDs for FREE! It even cover the shipping fee for you! Since the shipping fee is more expensive than the CD itself, so you are encouraged to order multiple copies!
The Ubuntu team will send you Ubuntu CDs at no charge, for you to install and share. We will cover the cost of shipping the CDs to you as well.
[ FREE Ubuntu CD, via wongpk ]
Free CD! Free shipping! What are you waiting for?
What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system that starts with the breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months), a clear focus on the user and usability (it should “Just Work”, TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.
Note: I do not send the Ubuntu CDs.

yup, i know this long ago, and my CDs finally arrived few weeks before.
now it comes to another issue: how to do dual booting? WinXP and Ubuntu, or in another case, with only Ubuntu.
when I buy this PC, it comes along with a CD which contains drivers for my printer, scanner, sound cards, graphic cards etc…..to be installed whenever I format my computer. with the ubuntu system, can these drivers be installed? will that be ok?

I have no experience with Ubuntu yet. Generally the dual boot steps are same. First thing first, back up all your data. Then, make a free hardisk partition for your Linux. Install Linux on the partition, the installation wizard will ask to install boot manager. The boot manager will detect windows installation and add it into boot menu. Done.

Just remember the standard Linux rule. It can read Windows partitions but Windows cant read the Linux partitions.
So make sure you install Windows first, then Linux.

the shipit program exist since their first release, Ubuntu 4.06 Warty Warthog. and this continues even now, for Hoary Hedgehog (Ubuntu 5.04) and i believe it would still be available when Brezzy is out.
go ahead and try. i rate Ubuntu high as it is a distribution aimed for Desktop use.

I dual boot Ubuntu and WinXP. Everything’s easy and simple. Bootloader’s there in the installation CD, it even detects WinXP for you.
No problem.

colbert: I am not linux user.
For my understanding, this is the new version of Ubuntu. The one they got in last year is older version.

I’ve reveived 20+ with different machine (AMD64, PowerPC & x86 based)
But Ubuntu got some limitations la ekceli.
So I prefer Slax Linux Live. It’s based on Slackware Distro.
Autodetect pcmcia, soundcard etc~
The ISO can be downloaded from Slax website

For Live CD, you can try Knoppix at http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
Althought I am not a Linux user, I did download Knoppix and burnt it to a CD to try it. This thing works, you just put your CD in your CD-ROM drive and boot it up, it comes with a lot of applications.
Give it a try. Warning: only download if you are on broadband

There are many Live CDs nowadays, almost every Linux distro has release Live CD now. Live CD is a great way to try the distro without messing any file on your computer.

I got this CD 2 months ago! They practically sent me all different versions such as intel, amd64, x86! But it will take them 2 months to send to your house so don’t bother to wait for them to arrive in the next week.

Probably a less interesting note: Don’t you think Ubuntu’s logo look a lot like MSN Spaces?
