eWeek reviewed StarOffice 8 and gives it a very good rate.

StarOffice 8—the latest version of Sun Microsystems Inc.'s inexpensive, cross-platform office productivity suite—stands up better than ever next to Microsoft Corp.'s market-leading Office in terms of features, extensibility and compatibility.

StarOffice 8 is only USD$69.95, while Microsoft Office 2003 Standard is USD$399.00. Alternatively, you can try the free open source office suite -- OpenOffice.org, which is compatible with StarOffice as well as Microsoft Office.
Thought
Do you spend few hundred bucks to upgrade existing MS Office to 2003 edition? I think many users still stick with Office XP because there are not much new features in the latest version.
On the other hand, both StarOffice and OpenOffice.org keep on improving their products to compete with Microsoft Office. Will they success to replace Microsoft Office? Will Office 12 (next MS Office) attract new users?
I think StarOffice or OpenOffice.org is good enough for home user. Why do you need to spend few hundred dollars more for features that you do not use?
