If you are looking for free online file storage space, take a look at Box.net. It offers 1GB storage space for FREE!

Box.net - free online file storage

Box.net is a Web 2.0 application that offers online storage services. Every free membership gets free 1GB storage space. You can upload your files (any types) and host them on Box.net. Then, you can share the files with your family and friends.

Oh! Box.net supports tags and RSS feeds too!

If you are willing to spend a few bucks per month, you can upgrade to Premium or Pro account. Beside bigger storage space (5GB and 15GB) and more monthly data bandwidth (20GB and 50GB), paid accounts also support unlimited file sizes when uploading, public file sharing (host files for public downloads), and blog postings.

My two cents

First of all, I like the website design style. Thanks to Web 2.0 technology, the user interface is very friendly and smooth. It’s exactly like how you are working on a desktop application and not a web based application. However, it takes very long to load for the first time.

The file upload speed is ok. I get average 20KB/sec. But file download speed is rather unstable, range from “idle” to 50KB/sec.

I would love to try to data sync feature but Box.net is not ready for it yet. That’s too bad.

Overall, no harm getting a 1GB free online storage space. But I didn’t have the confident to host my private files on the server, yet.

I think the transfer rates depend solely on your connection. I upload to box.net at ~80kb/s and download at over 500kb/s. Think you might like my box.net review recently: http://www.paulstamatiou.com/2006/03/01/boxnet-next-gen-storage-for-the-masses/

Most of these so called free service does have some hidden catch. If you are really serious about the data stored in the online storage then it is better to go with some service which has been there for years. Try IBackup, they have a great reputation. BTW do they alllow a FTP upload?

Box.net does have a lot of hype, but there is no real technologies it has added to the online storage service. I would say XDrive, FilesAnywhere, and more recently, DriveHQ.com have much better technologies and features. I particularly like DriveHQ’s FileManager and WWWBackup software, really works like Explorer, makes online storage more like a local drive, and the performance is quite good.
FileManager already has sync feature, and wwwbackup has real-time backup and versioning support, both applications support encrypted backup. So where does Box.net stand?
