Studies found that web surfers mostly focus on a triangle area at top of Google search results.

A joint eye tracking study conducted by search marketing firms Enquiro and Did-it and eye tracking firm Eyetools has shown that the vast majority of eye tracking activity during a search happens in a triangle at the top of the search results page indicating that the areas of maximum interest create a “golden triangle”.

My two cents
Again, it is proven that top left area of a web page is a hot spot. Now, you should know where to put your ads. ![]()

Not useless but lower performance. It also depends on your page design.

I think it’s kind of obvious that the top left will be the hot spot simply because Google’s search results are listed there.
If Google were to put their search results on the right, the hot spots will tend to be skewed towards the right.
Take this page for instance:

I bet the hot spot will be on the right. But then again, I could be wrong :p

We have been “trained” to read from left to right, top to bottom.
