Slow TMNet International Connection?
Filed in: Tmnet — August 1st, 2006
Recent few weeks, my friends and I discovered that TMnet Streamyx is slow when connecting to International web servers.
TMnet’s speedometer shows that my line is normal speed, but I get a different result from TestMy.net (non-Malaysia website).

107Kbps… It is terrible slow for a 1Mbps broadband line! For your information, I am in Kluang, Johor… A Johor only problem? ![]()

Don’t worry you’re not alone on this. I’m living in KL and my 1MB broadband connection is like a ISDN line and usually slower!
What should we do to make TM realise their screwing with our money?

Same problem here in Malacca.

Well, not a complete fix for the terrible Streamyx speeds, but ever since switching from TM DNS servers to the free http://www.opendns.com service, accessing sites, including overseas ones, seems more brisk and responsive. So far no timeouts and instability like you get with Streamyx DNS servers. Worth a try!
It’s frustrating especially as I have some of my websites like http://palmdoc.net hosted in the USA….

Thanks, Palmdoc. I will try OpenDNS

I don’t think OpenDNS will make a very big difference. I’m using it now.

yup, im using openDNS, not much different..the problem i think is the congested international trunk…..ehhehe oversubscription of user?

Yup, surft at low traffic hours (early morning) is faster.
I am using OpenDNS now, it is better than TMnet DNS.
More detail report coming later.

did you guys check your router for the line speed from the tmnet trunk to your line ? that’s important. I am subscribed with a 512 kb package but my router shows I’m connected at 1MBps. Sweet

Do you heard the rumours that TMNut already slow down your BT connection? I heard they want to follow Jaring Packages.. Pay based on your total download per day. Is it true? BTW before this my BT download was around 200kbps but right now its about 50kbps and I cannot surf to other website if my download already reach to 50kbps.

@moskau12: I don’t see the slowness here in Johor.

how can i make open dns? and where do i get that DNS?

FIRST OF ALL… 1 Mbps means “one mega-bit per second” not “one mega-byte per second”. This is what confuses people.
8 bits make up one byte.
so,
1024 bits X 1024 bits
= 1,048,576 bits / 8 bits per byte
= 131,072 bytes
= 128kB/second
b = bit = one lightbulb
B = byte = eight lightbulbs
(1024 is used instead of 1000 in byte-metrics)
125kB/s is just the limit the line could go. You still don’t know how fast the servers and TMNet is.
Now, I think its TMNet that is slowing things down. They have not upgraded their servers for years already.
