Ella, the WordPress 2.1!
Filed in: WordPress — January 23rd, 2007
As soon as I upgraded LiewCF.com to use WordPress 2.0.7, WordPress.org released WordPress 2.1 “Ella”. That is only a week after WP2.0.7 was released! Ouch!
Ella? Ella Fitzgerald, is a jazz vocalist. List of Ella Fitzgerald’s most popular albums.
Besides over 550 bug fixes, WordPress 2.1 included the following new features:
- Autosave when writing new draft.
- Tabbed editor to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly.
- Lossless XML import/export — easily moving content between WordPress blogs.
- Spell checking added to visual editor.
- Search engine pricacy option allows you to hide your blog from search engines.
- Set a WordPress Page as the front page of your blog, simulate a CMS site.
- More efficient and faster database code.
- Support sub-categories in blogroll.
- Login screen redesigned (Shuttle project).
- More AJAX controls for faster and easier management in WordPress Admin panel.
- Pages can be drafts or private.
- WordPress Admin panel loads faster and more visually consistent.
- Dashboard RSS feeds updates instantly and asynchronously in the background.
- Comments feeds include all the comments.
- Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages.
- Upload Manager lets you easily manage pictures, video, and audio.
- Akismet 2.0 plugin bundled.
- Some hidden easter egges.
Wow! That’s a great list of new features! I have to back to WordPress upgrade very soon…
Unlike previous 2.0.6 to 2.0.7, WP2.1 is a major upgrade. Instead of replacing a few updated files, you need to do the complete WordPress upgrade.
The WordPress 2.1 was released only a week after WordPress 2.0.7 was. That’s very fast! But don’t be surprised by more updates soon, because the WP team decided to have a more frequent release schedule.
We’ve decided to shift to a more frequent release schedule like Ubuntu, with major releases coming several times a year. So, for the first time in WordPress’ history, I have an answer to when the next version is coming out: April 23rd.
Oh well, shall I wait for WP 2.2?
Sick of manual WordPress updates? Please vote for the idea “Easy Updating of WordPress“! Hopefully they will implement it in WP 2.2. ![]()

you can’t “DUH!” it man because it’s already well known that wordpress 2.1 will follow very closely when 2.07 was announced. 2.07 was released because of the issues with 2.06…
anyway, the Visual Rich Text editor is still messy to use. hahaha!

opensource is fast.

“Set a WordPress Page as the front page of your blog, simulate a CMS site.”
That for me is the best thing about 2.1
I think i’ll wait till later before upgrading, maybe around 2.1.2

will the plugins for 2.0.x work for 2.1???
January 24th, 2007 at 3:45 am
WP 2.2 is still a long way to go. Might wait for WP 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 for some bug fixes.
Anybody who upgraded to 2.1 has any plugin issues?

as Mossie`Ol Chin said..WordPress announce that 2.0.6 will be the last release of 2.0.x and then after 10 days they release a version for including some bug fixes and then announce that the 2.1 version will be release by the end of the month..and here we go
aquazero - you can see here a list of the plugins supported with 2.1

joneh, if your host has fantastico, do a 1-click upgrade.
January 25th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
malique: can i click while already using worpress? duhh question need urgent answer.
January 26th, 2007 at 2:18 am
fantastico already updated to latest wordpress version? Sometimes we still need to do manual upgrade for wordpress when fantastico does not support new version upgrade.
January 26th, 2007 at 3:14 am
It wasn’t so bad! The upgrade process was stimulating enough that I wrote an “Upgrade Tips” post with my process…. if anyone wants to read it, the permalink is http://foxhavenjournal.com/2007/01/25/upgrade-tips-for-wordpress-21-ella/
I wouldn’t want to do it very often however… I like the “Easy Updating of WordPress” idea too. For a non-coder like me, I guess this is as easy at it gets for now. And LcF is right- fantastico upgrade was not available yet… but I think I learned more from the process on this particular blog.

Thanks for the link, Reaper-X.
@Joneh: I don’t think WP2.1 will slow down your blog. In fact, your blog should run faster with its optimized code. Are you still having slow WP blog?
