Malaysian Bloggers Sued for Defamation
Filed in: Malaysia, Weblog — January 18th, 2007
According to MalaysiaKini, “Two socio-political bloggers have been served with papers by lawyers representing New Straits Times Press (NSTP) over postings in their blogs that were deemed defamatory.”
The two bloggers are Jeff Ooi (Screenshots) and Ahirudin bin Attan (Rocky’s Bru). Sheih (Kickdefella) created a “Bloggers United” banner to support them.
It has created a massive response among Malaysian bloggers. Nike Wong has a long list of the related blog posts.

Bear think they deserved to be sued and convited if the grounds for the defamation found true.
Bloggers may write as they wish. Anything true or otherwise and let people judge as they see fit.
If the content blogged were true, blogger will be rewarded with respect and honour.
If the content blogged were not true, the mechanism of punishment will be invoked.
Let justice take it’s path. The truth is out there.

From my point of view, Jeffooi deserve it. He should heed the ‘early warnings’ he get from NSTP since last year. But what did he do? He blew the thing out of proportion, and play with fire.
The legal proceeding doesn’t sounds like NSTP wants to win, but it’s more like trying to harrass, and rattle him away because NSTP has ran out of choice, except through legal channel. But one thing about NSTP, they have a lot of $$$ and resident lawyers, something the jeffooi lacks.
Win or Loose the case, you still loose your time and money, and probably your job too if you’re working with somebody else.

[...] In the new government administration which practises a conservative approach to the Internet, more Malaysian bloggers are getting into trrouble. The recent outburst when high-profile blogger Jeff Ooi (I met him a few times, really nice guy) was sued for defamation led to ideas about creating a strong, united Malaysian bloggers front and prevent this from happening again.
