Shortcuts for WordPress Editor Quicktags
Filed in: Tips n Tricks, WordPress — January 18th, 2007
Every WordPress users should know what are the Quicktags. They are the buttons to insert HTML tags(bold, italic, image, …) into WordPress editor. But few people know that the buttons have shortcuts. No more leaving your hands off keyboard while blogging!
Here are the quicktags shortcuts:
Alt+B = Bold
Alt+I = italic
Alt+Q = Blockquote
Alt+T = more (Read More tag)
Alt+U = ul (Unordered list)
Alt+O = ol (Ordered list)
Alt+L = li (list item)
Alt+A = link
Alt+C = code
Alt+S = ins
Alt+D = del
Alt+P = Publish (the post)
Note: Mac users use Ctrl key instead of Alt. You might want to try Alt+Shift too.
For advance users, you can hack the Quicktags and add your own buttons!

Don’t the quicktags use Alt and not Ctrl?

In Firefox 2, you have to press Alt+Shift.

I can’t count the times when the Alt-P shortcut triggered by accident (using the us_intl keyboard layout, right alt + p produces o-umlaut)…

Are you sure this is working? I’m having some problems in Opera with those shortcuts.

I think that FireFox 2 kinda broke the Shortcuts, (aka Access Keys I think) by changing it to CTRL-SHIFT-whateverkey.
A bit of a pain because I’ve now started pressing CTRL-SHIFT-B to bold stuff in Word, AND IT DOESN’T WORK!

@LcF, I guess it is browser and OS related!
Maybe you can update this shortcuts to reflect the diff browsers, e.g. with IE, Firefox, Opera on Windows, and browsers other OSes etc.
From what I see so far, it is Alt in IE and Alt+Shift in Firefox.

Thanks, I added a small note. The quicktags shortcuts do not work for Opera for Mac.

Nice tips, but I’ll rather click on buttons than get my finger twisted.

Does anyone have a problem with the shortcuts after upgrading to v2.1? Alt+I or Alt+Shift+I does not work with making the text italic anymore, I have to use Ctrl+I and it became painful.
