No Pirated Software in Low Yat Plaza

Filed in: Malaysia, Technology — March 17th, 2007

advertisement

When I went to Together Gather Blogger Party, I also visited Low Yat Plaza with my younger brother. We discovered that there is no more pirated software selling in Low Yat Plaza.

There were a few of pirated software shops in Low Yat Plaza. All of them were closed down and replaced by new shops when we visited. The new shops were selling some computer accessories. We cannot get pirated software in Low Yat Plaza anymore.

Now, where can I buy genuine software? I do not see any software shop…

Few days ago, The Star reported that The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs got new helpers, two well-trained dogs, to detect optical discs in mailed packages.

Good dogs. :)

Gaman, I do. Although my employers paid for it :)

And yes, please use original software. If you can’t afford it, then use an Open Source alternative… If you’re both broke and dumb, just download any “free” spyware-laden one you can find ;)

Why no one consider using open source like linux? It’s free and comes with all your software which you need to be productive, like open office, gimp (photo editing) , apache (for hosting your blog?) … much much more.
My only problem is I can’t move the mouse because the one I got doesn’t support USB mouse… :(

joshuayip I think linux is just beyond the grasp of most average computer users.

Apache is no use if you don’t have a good server to host it on and then you need to be a techie.

You know what? Up to now, I have yet to hear any incentive from the government to promote the use of original software or games for personal users, which also make up a good number of Malaysian pirated software users. All I read about is crackdowns on businesses using pirated software, distributors and producers. How are they expected to eliminate software piracy in Malaysia if they don’t focus more on demand?

Worst of all, original software is still largely unaffordable and limited in supply in Malaysia. Due to the shit value of the ringgit, we’re still paying 3.5 times the amount for original software in the US. That means a typical game that costs 50 US dollars costs 175 ringgit in Malaysia. Most teens and young-adults can’t afford that, especially when some of them have jobs, work on a low salary, do not fall under a minimal income bracket. Neither can’t a typical Joe Public easily obtain original software from his local sundry store. You either need to order one (which god knows what would take anytime from a few days to weeks) at a local shop or go to a major urban center (KL, JB or Penang) to find them.

As long as the prices of original software doesn’t go down and become widely available, I’m not prepared to ditch pirate software anytime soon. The hell with these pirated CD/DVD crackdowns.

I once ask the Minister of Consumer himself Shafie Apdal how does the gov expect us to use ori software when the price is high. He just says we hv 2 use ori coz its the law. Looks like the gov does not bother to find a way 2 solve the prob. As long as there is demand there is always supply. All those crackdowns are only for show. Just think about it, do we seriously bliv all those confisticated disc are destroy? Bet those enforcement officer are enjoying watching the latest movie everyday.

    Mr. Bear Says:

    No pirated software?

But if you have the $$$, bear do not see why not you pay up? No need to deal with pirates.

Alot of professional such as those in the photo shops uses original Photoshops on macs. Some friends bear knows uses original photo editors in additon to the ones that comes with the camera (bear still use paint, kpaint, gimp). But many now supplement their software with opensource software such as openoffice. Bear do not see a reason not to use opensource apps, bcos it is good enough for the job, just use it.

Seriously, who needs it when you can get non-pirated, at no cost, copylefted GPL software that guarantees your freedom to modify and share the apps??

    Try bittorrent fedora from http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
