5 Gadgets that Bloggers Should Have
Filed in: Gadgets, Weblog — May 1st, 2008
I know what you are thinking when we talk about the gadgets for blogger. Yeah, blogger should have one of the Apple’s product such as iPod Touch, smart PDA like blackberry or dopod, 10 Megs of pixels with cool lenses DSLR like Nikon D60 or Sony Alpha.
How about Sony PSP or any MP4 player that can play any video from YouTube and dailymotion?
Talking about mobility, we have Nokia Communicator or Sony Ericsson P/T series. What else?
OK, here are another 5 gadgets that blogger should have but seldom be mentioned.
USB Fan — it is very useful to deal with the heat of your computer or yourself. Any marathon blogger here?

Wi-Fi detector — it comes handy to find free and unsecured wireless Internet connection. You do not need to wait for computer startup to detect available wireless network.

Mini printer — Sometimes you need a printer to print your document or something when you are on the road. Starbucks doesn’t provide a printer, does it?

External hardisk — store your not-so-important files such as movies, TV series, music collection and so on. It is handy to act as a backup device too.

Small UPS — Can you imagine when a blackout happens, electric power over voltage or your battery is dying at the same time you are currently doing something that is important. This can save your hours of work.

I think you’re missing the most important one. A cheap ultraportable laptop like the EeePC. It works better than an iPod touch as a computer. Only takes like 15 seconds to boot up, and find a wireless access. Best of all, you can do this standing up because it’s ridiculously light and small.
Personally you can do without the wifi detector. Plenty of phones already have the ability to detect wifi access.
As for a hard disk, it’s much better to get a large capacity high speed thumbdrive. 16 or a 32 gig Cosair or Sancruzer is a good bet. Try not to get a cheap one if you’re going to be running programs off it otherwise it’ll be slow, though storing movies and files is no problem.
It’s all about being a road warrior. The less you have the more you can do for less, the better. While smart phones or the iPod touch is a good choice, I could never be far from a keyboard and a larger screen display.

LoL Edrei is always going on about the Eee PC. Yeaps, it’s something I’m gonna get too!
Haha… don’t mind me pimping my client a bit here, but I find my N95 essential.
5 MP camera takes 90% of the photos I use on my blog.
3.5G and bluetooth modem functionality let’s me get online when I want where I want (thanks to Maxis 3G)
Full functioned web browser for checking comments, reading other’s blogs and twittering.

Haha…well…it’s the only one I find that works. The HP Mini-Note 2133 while looking good is a tad bit underpowered, heavy and a bit too pricey.

you need a shaver, because full time blogger keep staying in front the monitor, seldom care about beard become jungle like, here i highly suggested Razer Razor shaver for blogger, which is actually specialize design for gamers.
The shaver move very fast with 6000dpi sensor(normally mouse only 900dpi) and 4000Hz Ultra polling/0.25ms response time save your time at the bathroom for shave and let you start to blogging before others blog the topic.
The shaver also include 64KB on-board memory which let you personalize your shaving profile, you can check this http://www.impelgd.co.uk/razor/

Hey! Do you guys come out to meet at some day or at IMC club?
May 2nd, 2008 at 5:19 pm
USB fan better than laptop cooler pad?
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I have a table fan aimed at my laptop because it is on pretty much 24/7. My Dell XPS heats up quite a bit after using it for an hour even though I am not running any big apps. The upside of having an XPS is the WiFi detector built in which can be handy.
EVERYONE needs to get an external hard disk for sure. The one touch backup ones are great and hassle free.
Good list.

I am using cooler pad. I think USB fan not so powerful, more to decoration to me.
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
LoL! I think the USB fan is more for the blogger, not the computer. Eee PC FTW!
May 3rd, 2008 at 1:03 am
I use my Toshiba G900 PDA Phone …. hehe
May 3rd, 2008 at 1:43 am
@ desmond - haha..what do you think in enhancing the bed features like usb powered massager
@ lengzai - im thinking about the water proof laptop that we can blog when we take a bath
@ greentac - i think the cheapest item that listed above was usb fan
@ jeremy - please let me know ya if your want to TT
@ flash online - i think so, because we can adjust the fan direction manually
@ wilson - i bought Maxtor One Touch but too bad..i bought it 2 weeks before the PC Fair
@ steve yu - currently im using standing fan, more powerful!
thanks liew cf reader for the great input

I wouldn’t mind the Eee PC myself, but there are a few drawbacks. The 4GB memory needs to be supplemented by maybe a 4GB SD Card, the ram ought to be upgraded to 1.0GB. All can be done, but it adds to the cost.
In the end, I’d favour a 12inch DELL Vostro for 2.5k. It’s only a kilo heavier than the Eee PC.
And no, Lenovo doesn’t make 12inch notebooks for that cheap, so David Lian, you needn’t suggest it even if it isn’t your account

I can simplify some of the above recommendations to just an N95 mobile phone:
- External harddisk: a mass storage device of over 4GB (some had tested up to 32GB)
- Wi-Fi detector: a wireless hub for several Wi-Fi-enabled devices to go online
For the mini-UPS, notebooks/laptops usually can last for about 2 hours on battery. When there’s blackouts, you won’t have the heart to do your work.

There’s one more thing that bloggers should have: unlimited data plan to carry out live updates or just a short blogging on the move via a mobile phone.
I recommend (currently) Celcom’s 3G unlimited data plan. It only costs RM68/mth and you can online anywhere you want via your mobile phone or notebook and do live updates straight to your blog using Flickr’s blogging function (supports wide-range of blog providers such as Wordpress, Blogger…etc.)

What about a GPS device? As GPS is getting more and more popular in Malaysia, I think a GPS device is useful for bloggers who write location-based contents, especially food bloggers.
You can simply include the GPS coordinate of a location that you’re writing. Besides, with the help of Garmin Mapsource and Malsingmaps, you can also simply make a print screen image to provide a cool and geographically accurate location map. In a post I’ve written about Pulau Melaka, I’ve included a location map made from Mapsource print screen.

A blogger should equipped with a HP with bluetooth + camera as well as a laptop with bluetooth. This will enable a real blogger to take snap shots as well as blogs on demand.

That printer looks cool man. Anyone know where I could find one locally in KL?
May 5th, 2008 at 12:53 am
The wifi detector looks useless to me. It is much better to carry a PDA/phone that supports wifi. You can open up your PDA to detect it. Besides that, the PDA could be used as a blogging tool.
Speaking of PDA, just for your information, HTC has took over Dopod quite long ago.
May 5th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Hey, why no one mention about scanner? I though scanner is also important for bloggers?
May 5th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Blog with a 3G handphone if you’re on the move. You can never use a laptop to blog when you are on site to make live updates.

Amongst MY top five gadgets is a bong
whenever I am lacking inspiration it comes in handy
May 6th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I am not always on the go, so I do not have such fancy mobile setup. External HDD is a must have because backup is always needed but till now I still haven’t get one for myself.
I have iPod as my wifi detector, used it to check email.
If I really need to check my mail on the go, I just have to go GPRS on GMAIL.
It will be nice if Malaysia has cheap unlimited mobile broadband plan. As for the moment, cheapest is Celcom, but I am a Maxis user. If it’s below RM50 then it will be great.
