Canon 450D and 24-105mm F/4 L IS USM Lens
Filed in: Gadgets, Reviews — January 7th, 2009
Here are the Canon 450D (kits) and Canon 24-105mm F/4 L IS USM lens that cost me an arm, more than RM6400.
How much?
he Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens is, more expensive than the camera kit itself, RM3900.
The lens is still considered cheap because the retail price is around RM4500! I got it for RM3900 because it is the “kit lens” of Canon 5D kit. The shop sells Canon 5D and the lens separately…
Free gift?
There is NO free gift. No cheapskate tripod. No memory card. No cleaning kit. No card reader. You get what you pay for, that’s all.
Where did I buy them?
Tarita or Boeing Photo, both in Sungai Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. I got the 450D kit at Tarita but the lens at Boeing Photo (because Tarita sold the last lens at the last minute…).

Sample photos
I am not pro photographer. I am still learning how to handle the RM6K toy in my hands. Here are the pics that I can show for the reasons to have a DSLR.

notice the “bokeh” at the background of the boy. you can’t easily get this with your point-and-shoot camera.

To buy
I have got my DSLR and a general purpose lens (Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM) but I still lack of some important photography equpments:
- external flash
- tripod
- ball head (to be attached on tripod)
- dry box
- good camera bag
- SDHC memory card reader
- cleaning kit / blower
An external flash is about RM1000. A good, lightweight tripod can cost up to a few K! And, few hundred bucks for each the tripod ball head, dry box, and camera bag.
Lenses wishlist
Although I have 2 lenses now (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM), but they are not enough! Here are the lenses in my wishlist. Each of them will cost my another arm or leg…
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM — Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens with up-to-4-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). (review)
- Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 USM Macro — Excellent macro lens. The 100mm focal length along with great bokeh (foreground/background blur quality) makes this a great portrait lens as well. (review)
- Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM lens — Wide angle lens. Very high image quality, one of the best general/multi-purpose lenses available. (review)
I would buy the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM first for my spy street shooting, as well as portraits, wildlife, and many other general-purpose tele-zoom needs.
My two cents
Frankly, it costs a lot for all the photography equipments. I have been poisoned by the image quality! Of course, equipment is not everything. I am learning and practicing photography skills.

Many times I had advised you not to sit all the time in front of your PC but to take a stroll in your neighbourhood, but you declined. Now you are really motivated to go outdoor, huh? Get a dry box first.

Smashing Magazine has quite a lot of creative-related freebies and tutorials, including Photoshop related stuff. Some of the tutorials are pretty handy too. I’ve shared them with my camera friends. Haha. Unfortunately, me not really into photography la. My father is, not me. =_=

Welcome to the SLR world…
We both sort of have the same “to-buy” list!
If you want a reasonably good lens at a steal, try out the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. It’s selling for RM350-380. It’s a good lens with nice bokeh and quite good for low-light conditions.
You a member of PhotoMalaysia?
Join up!! Plenty of good stuff there.

Great EF L lens. How is the Canon LiveView perform?
January 8th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Great camera! And I can say because recently my wife and I got the same camera, with the 18-200mm Lens, which is alright for a all round lens. But we regret, because it does not provide much emphasis on smaller objects you would be better off getting 18-50 and 55-200.
By the way welcome to DSLR, you’ll have so much fun. If you like can check out our gallery on our website for some inspiration if you like.

@uglyguy: nikon is great too! it is as popular as canon.
January 10th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
@AhTim: Canon LiveView is basically useless. It is useful only when you want your friend (who do not know how to aim at view finder) help you to take a shot.
January 11th, 2009 at 9:58 am
the pics caught by using the camera was really nice.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
Awesome. Its really expensive huh?! The most expensive camera I’ve got is just about RM1050 and I have feel that it is EXPENSIVE…but now comparative to your camera…phews…at least I feel better. Lol!
January 12th, 2009 at 4:13 am
@PinkLady: ya, good lens is expensive but it worth every cent!
January 12th, 2009 at 6:35 am
With some small difference in price, you will be able to get 40D. Why u choose to stay at 450D?
January 12th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
@Marco: you’re right! I didn’t look at 40D at all..
January 12th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I hope the camera won’t take much of your time otherwise your blog posts would be less. I know a pic is worth a thousand words but I prefer to read your blog posts.

Hi Liew,
Congrat on your new camera.
Your sharp focus pictures remind me that…when the 450D launch, it has the focus issue…is it solve right now?
I’m not a photographer, that’s why I cannot identify it through the pictures you snap.
Anyway, nice shots! Hope to see more pictures from your blog.
Cheers!
January 14th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
@Robo: I don’t see any focus issue with 450D

I have 2 SLRs but not inconvenient to carry them around. My C905 is now my constant companion since it has many excellent features.
