I am Quitting Blogging

“I am quitting blogging.” A friend told me some time ago. He started blogging 3 months back now and wanted to call it a day.

“What?” I am kinda surprised.

“Yes. You heard me right. I am quitting blogging. In fact, I have deleted the contents of my blog. It’s clean now. Empty. Nothing in it.”

“Why? It’s been only 3 months. Don’t you think it’s too early to throw in the towel?”

“No, lah. I had enough already. I am not even sure I did the right thing by jumping into this blogging thing in the first place. I have less than one dollar in my Adsense income and it does not seem to grow. Plus I am also running out of idea to write so my blog is as good as dead.” It seems like there’s no turning back for him.

3 months passed. One day, he came back.

“I am blogging again.”

And so he did. And after another 3 months, guess what, the same thing happened again. He told me he doesn’t to write again. I am not sure if he would ever come back.

This friend went a full circle from writing his first blog entry into making a full stop – twice - in a space of a year, and still ended up nowhere. Had he continue writing short entries in his first blog twice per week, in a year his blog would have grown into having more than 100 articles. Within a year his blog would have a page rank, some link backs, generated a few loyal readers and his income is very likely to grow if he monetizes it right.

It’s very true when motivators said that many people in their life quit at the tip of their success. Just think of the time we boil water. For a good 2 minutes, as the water is heating up, we barely see any changes. But on the molecular level, the H20 particles are agitating, chemical bonds are breaking and once the temperature hits 100 degrees, there’s no stopping it to boil.

Advertlets, You are Fired!

July 22nd, 2008 | Category: Make Money Online, Malaysia | 63 Comments

The is a guest post submitted by Wong Tech Jung, a blogger on duller.kuluchew.com. The original Chinese blog post is available at here. All content and opinions belong to the author.

I (Wong Tech Jung) am a Chinese blogger. In October last year, I decided to use Advertlets over Nuffnang. This decision is due to the amount of Nuffnang and earning I received from Nuffnang is too low, and lots of Malaysian Chinese blogs are using Advertlets as well. However today I gave up Advertlets and changed back to Nuffnang again.

The decision of abandoning Advertlets is simply because they can’t pay to the publishers. After using Advertlets for two months (since October 2007), my blog was affected by its domain name expiry in January. Due to Josh and his colleagues Alzheimer, they allowed their domain name to expire and this is the worst thing that could happen for an online company. However I still wanted to give it a try.

After Advertlets settled its domain name expiry issue, it decided to pay more to the members who continued to use Advertlets. During that time, I have a pretty good earning. Some time later, I discovered Advertlets actually paid differently to bloggers with same traffic and advertisement (shown in image below).

I requested for a cashout in February and March as I reached RM 100 in both months. As Advertlets earning is just peanuts compare to other service, such as Google Adsense and Text Link Ads, I simply forgot the existence of Advertlets in my blog and didn’t bother to check back Advertlets earning again.

Received Google AdSense Secure Express Delivery Cheque

July 19th, 2008 | Category: Adsense Tips, Make Money Online | 19 Comments

I have been receiving Google AdSense payment via Western Union for months. It is very convenient and, most importantly, save cheque processing time and bank charges. However, my June 2008 payment is different. I received a Google AdSense cheque by DHL Express Mail!

Google AdSense Cheque delivered by DHL

Oh~ I miss the “green paper” from Google AdSense ;)

The DHL delivery is not free. Google charged me USD$24 (RM76.80) for the express delivery. That’s not cheap! With the cheque, I still have to bank in, wait for cheque processing, and pay bank fee…

So, it isn’t good to receive AdSense payment by DHL.

Why DHL instead of Western Union?

There is a maximum payment limit (USD$2,800) for Western Union payment method. If your AdSense earning exceeded the limit, Google AdSense will automatically switch your payment method to “Secure Express Delivery”.

You will continuously receive AdSense payment in “Secure Express Delivery”, unless you change AdSense payment method to Western Union again.

After being quiet for a very…very… long time on my blog, I quietly attended the 3rd Webmaster Malaysia Gathering held at The Apartment,The Curve. It was fully sponsored by Exabytes.

I attended the same gathering last year. This time, I was invited to give a talk. My 1st public talk. (Thank you, Lim CS)

My presentation is about myself, a pro-blogger. How did I get started as a fulltime blogger and shared some blogging tips. It was a short talk that took around 15 mins only.

Here is the slides I used in my presentation (created by Google Docs):

Google AdSense Known Issues Page

May 9th, 2008 | Category: Adsense Tips, Google, Make Money Online | 8 Comments

After the Massive Delay of AdSense Stats (fixed in a day), Google AdSense announced the Known Issues Page.

AdSense Known Issues Page is a list of currently known AdSense issues and possible work-arounds. For example, the delayed updates of AdSense stats are listed:

Issue: Reports are taking longer than usual to generate, and aren’t showing complete data for earnings, clicks, and impressions.

Work-Around: None at the moment, but rest assured that this delay in reports won’t affect your earnings or payments.

Updates: This issue has been resolved. Reports should be up to date and correct, with all previously missing information now showing.

While the Known Issues Page is informative for AdSense publishers but there is no option to subscribe to the page updates to be informed immediately on new issues.

Anyway, there is a workaround. You can use ChangeDetection service to notify you on web page changes.
