Live Messenger Virus: look at my summer pictures

July 25th, 2007 | Category: Microsoft, Security | 22 Comments

To all MSN Messenger or Live Messenger users, DO NOT accept “summer2008.zip” file from your friends! It is a worm virus!

I received strange message from my two MSN friends (both girls) that say “look at my summer pictures http://___.tripod.com/summer2008.zip” (subdomain hidden). I downloaded the zip file and extract. It appears to be an executable .scr file (default file extension for Windows screensaver).

Note: Never open a downloaded file before scan for virus. I am using Mac OS X, which cannot be infected by windows virus. ;)

OK, that’s fishy. It should be JPG or some other image formats. Although, SCR is default file extension for screensaver but many virus/worm also use the same extension to cheat the victims. I can confirm that the file is a worm/virus. I deleted the zip file and send a message to alert my friends, but they did not response.

My msn friends kept sending the messages randomly such as:

A photo with me and my best friend :$ !!

look at my sexysummer pictures http://___.tripod.com/summer2008.zip

Look how wasted Paris Hilton is, after she got jailed : (

This is me totaly naked :-O please dont send to anyone else

The Most Commonly Used Password is “Password”

April 29th, 2007 | Category: Security | 7 Comments

monkeyMaybe this sounds quite ironic but it is truth that the most commonly used password is “password”. The password does not serve the purpose of a password. Check out ThreadWatch for the top 10 commonly used passwords online.

I am surprised that the most popular animal used as password is “Monkey”, #6 in the list. How can it be?!

If you are using easy-to-guess password (e.g: dictionary word, birthday, name, phone number, IC, etc), please install the SecurePassword Generator firefox plugin or use the online password generator, if you are not Firefox user.

Then, jot down your passwords and keep it in a safe place. Yes, we have been told never to write down our passwords, but security experts from Microsoft and Apple said otherwise. So, listen to experts. :)

microsoft genuine softwareA google search query is found to reveal software license keys of one’s computer. The softwareincluding Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Adobe products, and more.

How does it work?

The Google query searches for all web pages with page titled “Belarc Advisor Current Profile” and contain “Software Licenses”. The “Belarc Advisor Current Profile” is a HTML report generated by Belarc Advisor, a free PC audit software.

Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, etc and create a HTML report to display in your web browser.

On the product page, the company ensures that “All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.” If that’s truth, the Google search results means that the users accidentally or purposely uploaded their profile reports.
