Nokia Lumia 710 Specs

Nokia Lumia 710 has 3.7-inch ClearBlack TFT touch-screen display with 800 x 480 resolution. The phone’s measurement is 119 mm x 62.4 mm x 12.5 mm, weight only 126 gram.  It is powered by 1.4 GHz single-core processor and 512 MB RAM, running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango mobile operating system. The internal storage is 8GB, no slot for micro-SD card.

Lumia 710 has a 5 MP camera with LED flash,  802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, micro-USB port. The Windows Phone uses a 1300mAh battery, claims to have a 3G talk time up to 7.6 hours or 6 hours video playback.

Nokia Lumia 710 is available in 2 colours: Black and White. The back cover is interchangeable to different colours: black, white, cyan, fuchsia, and yellow.

Nokia Lumia 800 Specs

Nokia Lumia 800 looks almost identical to Nokia N9, the first and last MeeGo phone. It has curved 3.7″ AMOLED ClearBlack glass touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution. Lumia 800 is using the the same 1.4 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM as Lumia 710. Both smartphones are running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango platform, have   802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, micro-USB port.

Nokia Lumia 800 has 16 GB internal storage, which is 2x more than Lumia 710′s. The high-end phone has 8 megapixel camera with a f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens with dual LED flash. Both Windows Phone can capture 720p video capture at 30 frames-per-second.

Lumia 800 build-in 1450 mAh battery and claims to give you up to 9.5 hours of 3G talk time, or 6.5 hours video playback time. The phone weight 142 gram, measurement is 116.5mm x 61.2 mm x 12.1 mm.

Malaysia Nokia Lumia Prices

Now still 7 days to the Malaysia Nokia Lumia release date. We haven’t get the official recommended retail price yet. However, our friend at MalaysianWireless revealed that Malaysia Nokia Lumia 800 is RM1650 (~USD $546) and Nokia Lumia 710 is RM999 (~USD $330). We would say that’s a competitive pricing.

My two cents

Based on the specifications, the only major differences between Lumia 800 (high-end) and Lumia 710 (lower-cost) are the display (AMOLED vs TFT), internal storage space (16GB vs 8GB), and the phone camera (8MP vs 5MP). If you are not mobile-phone-photog, Lumia 710 can save you RM650 to buy other gadgets.

LiewCF Tech Blog was invited to Maxis iPhone 4S launch event at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in the night of 15th December 2011. I drove all the way from Johor to KL to attend the event and hoped to get iPhone 4S at the 1st day (but failed).

The queue

I was there around 8:30pm and already few hundreds people lining up and patiently waiting for Maxis iPhone 4S launch in the 16th December midnight.

The first in the queue was Leonard Chan, 16. He was there since 12PM, that’s 12 hours before the launch time!

Talking about the iPhone 4S queue, a twitter friend (@WHSwee) reported that he was 2nd in queue but end up in the last due to bad registration process.

Press Conference

Media members were invited to Media Lounge, a comfortable hall with food & beverage served, live band, and whole row of notebooks for media to do live news update. Believe me or not, we were feeling sympathy to those waiting for hours outside the hall…

For the 1st time, Apple iPhone was launched concurrently by different Malaysia telcos at the same time. As the first telco to bring iPhone to Malaysians, Maxis was asked about the other telcos competition and estimated iPhone sales. I felt that Sandip Das, CEO of Maxis, wasn’t happy about the questions though.

In the iPhone 4S features presentation of T.Kugan, Head of Product, Device, Innovation & Roaming, didn’t hightlight the most talked about iPhone 4S feature – Siri. “We are not permitted [by Apple] to talk about Siri in Malaysia”, said Maxis when media asked for the reason.

Don’t worry. Malaysia iPhone 4S has Siri. Verified by yours truly.

The following is the Maxis iPhone 4S iValue plans:

Customers can enjoy FREE upgrades from iPhone 4S 16GB to 32GB when they sign up for iValue 4 on a 24-month contract for the first 30 days from the launch.

All Maxis iPhone plans include 4GB data quota of Maxis WiFi hotspots nationwide. To check out the nearest WiFi hotspot, you can download free Maxis WiFi app (iTunes link) from App Store.

During the press conference, Maxis also announced 2 other iPhone apps for Maxis customers: Maxis’ Customer Service app (iTunes link) and Maxis Roam (iTunes link).

Maxis Customer Service app allows customers to easily access their account and bill information, subscribe/unsubscribe to services and contact Maxis customer service. Maxis Roam app can detect your location and tell you the best data and call roam rates for the country you’re in.

At 11:45pm, media ushered to Hall 1 to witness the launch of iPhone 4S. Maxis had 40 counters ready to serve iPhone 4S customers.

There are iPhone 4S demo units available for you to play with. Some units had Siri turned off in iPhone Settings, and I thought they are iPhone 4 which has same design.

Before 12:00am, Maxis’ management team are waiting at the hall’s entry to welcome the first batch of Maxis iPhone 4S customers.

After the launch, media are invited to Maxis iPhone 4S party at Hall 4 for drinks and entertainment, and getting media offer iPhone 4S.

Maxis Media Offer

Maxis had a media offer for the press/bloggers who attended the iPhone 4S launch event. Maybe the media offer was very attractive (iPhone 4S discount!), the response was overwhelmed.

Many media members (I, included) didn’t get their iPhone 4S at the end of the event (3:00 am). Anyway, the media offer is valid for 1 week. I will get my Maxis iPhone 4S before Christmas!

I didn’t back with empty hands though. Every invited media member received a dual USB ports car charger as door gift.

I was exhausted after the event. It was my 1st time to attend iPhone launch event. Great experience and glad to meet the Maxis management team! By the way, many thanks to my lovely wife who fetch me back at 3:00am early morning.

9.45pm – Long line outside DiGi 360 SoHo KL.

DiGi had their iPhone 4S midnight sales launch at DiGi 360 SoHo KL at midnight of 16th December 2011. More than 60 people had lined up to get their iPhone before everyone else.

The first one in line was Chin Fe, who was waiting to pick up the phone since 6pm and was standing in line since 8.30pm.

DiGi started giving out numbering along with time slots at 10pm so that customers won’t had to stand in line for the next few hours.

10.00pm – Chin Fei got his No. 1 number for DiGi iPhone 4S.

DiGi had many of their staff coming from DiGi HQ to help out with the 48 hours in store sales, and the process of the purchasing had been made as pain-free as possible for customers to make sure they can get in and get out with their phone as fast as possible.

And, DiGi had prepared popcorns and lots of foods for those who are still waiting around to get their phone, also a comfortable place for them to hang out while waiting for their turn. Very nice!

On 12am, the door opened and welcome the first batch of DiGi iPhone customers. The promoter explained everything the customers need to know about DiGi iPhone plan before their purchases to make sure everyone know what they are getting into.

Soon after 12am – Chin Fe, the first walk-in customer walk away with his White 32GB iPhone 4S

DiGi is selling iPhone 4S at 160 DiGi stores nationwide. So you won’t need to come all the way down to KL just to get the iPhone 4S. Check your DiGi store nearby, there is a great possibilities that they will have it since day 1.

Interesting to know that you can also get the iPhone 4S online via their DiGi Store, you will get your phone the same day as those who lined up in stores. Apparently, some phones were shipped a bit too early. Some lucky customers got their DiGi iPhone 4S a day earlier. Thanks to the over-efficient courier.

DiGi’s 1st online customer Chin Chee Min received iPhone 4S from Ramesh Rajandran, DiGi’s Head of eBusiness.

I like that DiGi offer an alternative to buy iPhone 4S online and it will be perfect for people like me who won’t want to step out of my house, but get everything online.

BlackBerry #BB7MY event at Lust KL

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 and Curve 9380 had finally came to Malaysia. With both devices featuring the latest BlackBerry 7 OS, Blacberry had a #BB7MY party on 1st December 2011 at Lust KL inviting media and friends to get the first look on the two devices.

Let’s talk about the BlackBerry Bold 9790. This phone is basically a smaller and much cheaper version of the Bold 9900. It’s small and powerful. The phone has the familiar, “very BlackBerry” form factor, with the portrait keyboard everyone love, and some great and new features in the phone.

The gorgeous 2.45 inch touch screen will catch your eye, and at the back of it is a 5 megapixels autofocus camera, and comes with LED flash. The phone has 8GB internal storage, and also an microSD card slot for those who want to store more media on their phone. Inside the phone, it’s running a 1GHz processor with 768MB of RAM.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 comes with NFC and magnetic compass function

One of the really cool features of the Bold 9790 is the NFC feature and augmented reality support since it has built in magnetic compass. So you aren’t missing that much compared to Bold 9900, and in fact some might like this smaller form factor better.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 – First Touch Only Curve

For BlackBerry Curve 9380 is the first touch only device in the Curve series, comes with a 3.2 inch LCD touch screen. Without the keyboard, the phone is really thin and slick. It has a 5 megapixels autofocus camera with LED flash, and 512 MB of internal storage plus a microSD slot for more storage space. It runs on a 800MHz processor, and run BlackBerry OS7 smoothly.

Prices

Both of these phone is affordable and sweet. BlackBerry Bold 9790′s recommended retail price (RRP) is RM 1,488 and BlackBerry Curve 9380 is selling at RM 1,166 (RRP). Expect to get a lower price if you get the phone bundled with telco’s data plan.

Apple to held the “Let’s talk iPhone” media event at it’s headquarters in Cupertino, California at 10 a.m. October 4, 2011 (1 a.m. October 5, Malaysia time). We are expecting Apple to reveal new iPhone 5, release iOS 5, iCloud, and new Apple CEO, Tim Cook on stage.

The hints in Apple’s invitation

According to the October 4 press event invitation, there’s 4 iOS app icons. The calendar icon shows the date of the event. The clock icon shows the event’s start time. The map icon shows the event’s location (Apple’s Cupertino headquarters).

The last is a phone icon with a badge showing “1”. People think that it means Apple will introduce only one new iPhone model, though rumors in the past months say Apple probably planning multiple new iPhone models.

iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S?

If Apple would only introduce 1 new iPhone, I wish it is an iPhone 5 with slimmer body, larger display, better camera, more RAM, faster processor and running new iOS 5. There are rumors saying that Apple might only announce a slightly upgraded iPhone, iPhone 4S.

iOS 5

iOS 5 is the new mobile operating system from Apple. It has been previewed for months and expected to be released very soon… Probably, Oct 4? The iOS 5 includes many new features:

• Notification center, the solution to today’s annoying iOS alert.
• iMessage: send unlimited messages to other iOS users (iPhone, iPad, iPod) via WiFi or 3G.
• Reminders: ToDo list with due dates and locations.
• Twitter integration in Safari, Photos, Camera, YouTube and Maps.
• PC Free: No computer is needed to activate device, install iOS software updates.
• Access Camera app from Lock screen

iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3rd & 4th generations, iPad, iPad 2.

iCloud

The new iPhone is expected to include iCloud, the Apple’s cloud storage services. iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents, etc and sync them across the iDevices, PC, and Mac you own. No more manual syncing.

Tim Cook on stage

Steve Jobs resigned, and Tim Cook is the new Apple’s CEO. We believe he will be on the stage to do the presentation of new Apple iPhone. It is a golden chance to get people know the new CEO.

My two cents

I have been using iPhone 3GS as soon as it released in Malaysia in 2009. I claimed warranty for two times: “bricked” and glass cracked. Now its battery is dying. I really want a new iPhone 5. However, I might hold my purchase if Apple only release a slightly upgraded iPhone 4S.
