Received an email saying that my blog, LiewCF Tech Blog, is nominated in the “Tourism Technology Blog” category in the Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Award 2012 (MITBCA2012).

What the heck is MITBCA?!

Apparently, MITBCA2012 (I bet you can’t memorize this!) is organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia (Wow!). “The awards aim to encourage and honor the tourism bloggers across the globe for extensively promoting Tourism in Malaysia.”, according to the official website.

That’s funny. Firstly, I am not a tourism blogger. I am a tech blogger. Secondly, I did not promote tourism in Malaysia (sorry!).

To whoever nominated this blog to MITBCA2012, thank you very much. grin

So far there’s only 4 blogs in the “technology blog” category. Feel free to vote for this blog, click here

There are total 16 different categories for the award:

Malaysia International Tourism Fashion Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Entertainment Blog

Malaysia International Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Lifestyle Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Music Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Photography/Art Blog

Malaysia International Eco Tourism Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Duty Free Shopping Blog

Malaysia International Homestay Blog

Malaysia International Tourism Tourism Destination Blog

You need to sign in Facebook to vote. Judging criteria is based on 80% public voting and 20% on judges’ decision. Meaning, the most votes is winner.

There’s a Tourism Bloggers Conference

Oh yes, there’s a 2 days conference on 8th-9th May 2012 at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. It is free registration. Tea break and lunch provided. Sounds great, huh?

But, who are the speakers? The website mention nothing about the invited conference speakers.

My two cents

Not sure how much did the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia spent to develop the website, I think they can do much better with proper web design. The website itself does not get enough attention that I don’t see my fellow Malaysian blogger friends talk about it at all.

If you have a minute, please vote for this blog. I don’t mind to be awarded, anyway.

Packet One Networks Sdn. Bhd. (P1) is injecting RM30 Million to kick start its P1 4G rollout in East Malaysia. P1 is expected to make its debut in Sabah & Sarawak by quarter two this year starting with Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

P1 is expected to cover about 55% of households in Kota Kinabalu by the end of 2012. Then, P1 will gradually expand its coverage to Kepayan, Lido, Fortuna, Karamunsing, Menggatal, Likas, Penampang, Pertagas, Inanam, Nosoob, Damai, Kingfisher Park within Kota Kinabalu, to other towns in Sabah and the state of Sarawak.

P1 INJECTS RM30 MILLION TO KICK START EAST MALAYSIA 4G ROLLOUT

PETALING JAYA, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 – South-East Asia’s 4G broadband pioneer Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”) is injecting RM30 million to kick start its P1 4G rollout in East Malaysia. P1 is expected to make its debut in East Malaysia by quarter two this year starting with Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

P1’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Lai said consumers and businesses in East Malaysia particularly Kota Kinabalu will soon enjoy the power of 4G broadband by P1. The P1 deployment team has begun rolling out in Kota Kinabalu and by the end of this year expects to cover about 55 percent of households in that city. In line with P1’s mission of Broadband for All, P1 will gradually expand its coverage to Kepayan, Lido, Fortuna, Karamunsing, Menggatal, Likas, Penampang, Pertagas, Inanam, Nosoob, Damai, Kingfisher Park within Kota Kinabalu, to other towns in Sabah and the state of Sarawak.

“Our strategy is to rollout P1 services one location at a time and best manage our deployment resources between East and West Malaysia,” Lai informed. Commenting on the response expected in East Malaysia with regards to P1 4G service and packages, Lai hopes that the service will be a hit in East Malaysia just like its success with West Malaysia friends. P1’s coverage expands to 52 percent of the population as of the end of last year.

“People who know about the best value for money in broadband will know that P1 offers the best value for cost per gigabyte. The easy plug and play method of P1 4G minus the hassle of subscribing to a fixed telephone line for broadband are great plus points to experience P1’s service. What’s also amazing is with P1’s OnePlan™ packages that bundle a fixed modem for home and an on-the-go modem, P1 customers can have the best 4G experience at the best value for money; using the right device for the right purpose,” Lai explained.

In the last three years since P1’s service was introduced in West Malaysia, about 400 000 Malaysians today are enjoying an average of 17GB of data usage per month on P1’s 4G network. The interesting fact is, Malaysians using P1 4G services are already ahead of the forecast by Informa Telecoms & Media on the Asia Pacific monthly average Internet traffic per user in 2012 to be at 12.4GB.

Lai continued, "We are truly excited that East Malaysia will be enjoying the freedom of 4G high speed broadband. Our 4G network is revolutionising the way people communicate and we know this connectivity will be a key communications and technology enabler for many years to come. With P1’s 4G network, we hope to contribute positively to East Malaysia’s economy, especially within the SME business as well as the tourism industry.

“Sabah and Sarawak are blessed with unique wildlife and beautiful landscape. The broadband access can enable international tourists and backpackers much easier navigation and discovery of its natural wonders as well as online promotion of the states’ tourism hotspots. We understand a positive impact broadband access could have on GDP (gross domestic product) and attracting foreign direct investment. It also contributes to promoting national competitiveness by facilitating in a knowledge-based economy and creating knock-on effects in other sectors,” Lai explained.

P1 4G broadband is designed for rapid and wide area deployment that serve as the best solution for cost-effective broadband access, especially in suburban and rural areas within geographically diverse locations like Sabah and Sarawak.

“P1 will continue investing into its network, in both capacity and further coverage as well as in delivering highly innovative and state of the art product and services alongside with P1’s unique brand experience,” Lai concluded.

-End-

On 10 Feb 2012, I attended the Nokia Lumia launch event in Malaysia which was held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Read on for the details with photos and video.

The queue

The launch time was 5:30pm but I was there early and there was already a 100+ queue waiting to get their Nokia Lumia. The 1st in the queue was there since 6am, that’s 12 hours waiting!

Free gifts

The first 100 who purchased Nokia Lumia 800 got free Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset and Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse and Nokia premium, all worth up to RM1000.

The Nokia VIPs

Nokia Lumia launch event was started by a surprise flashmob dancing. Then followed by a scooter team, which led a black truck with Nokia Lumia demo units and VIPs.

First Nokia Lumia customer

Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 sold like hot cakes. 100 Lumia 800 was sold out in about 30 minutes. The Nokia centers inside Pavillion also had sold out all Nokia Lumia smartphones in the evening!

Nokia Lumia 800 specs

Nokia Lumia 800 has 3.7 inch AMOLED ClearBlack curved display and powered by 1.4GHz processor. 8MP Carl Zeiss optics and HD video playback. 16GB internal storage. Preload Internet Explorer 9 and Nokia Drive. Available in 3 colours (cyan, magenta and black). The recommended retail price is RM1650.

Nokia Lumia 800 demo

Here’s the Nokia Lumia 800 demo video I recorded to walkthrough the features of the Windows Phone with you:

Nokia Lumia 710 specs

Nokia Lumia 710 is powered by the same 1.4 GHz processor as the Nokia Lumia 800. Preload Internet Explorer 9 and Nokia Drive. Available in black and white with black, white, cyan, fuchsia and yellow back covers. Recommended retail price ar RM999.

My two cents

I like Nokia Lumia 800. The AMOLED ClearBlack curved display is very clear and bright even under bright sunlight. The translation from menu to menu, screen to screen is very smooth. Beautiful body and great camera.

On the other hand, Nokia Lumia 710 feels “plastic” and the CMOS display looks bad if placed beside Lumia 800. However, it uses the same processor as Lumia 800, therefore you can expect the same performance on Lumia 700. If you don’t mind the display and camera quality, Lumia 710 is a budget buy.

Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 are the first Nokia phones running Windows Phone platform. Both smartphones are to be launched in Malaysia in Feb 2012. In this article, you will learn about the Nokia Lumia phones release date, specifications, and prices in Malaysia.

Malaysia Nokia Lumia release date

LiewCF Tech Blog has invited by Nokia Malaysia to the launch of Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 in Malaysia at 10 February 2012. We will have a chance to speak to Nokia and Microsoft representatives and get a chance to experience the Nokia Lumia devices. Exciting? Yes, we are!

Check out the Nokia Lumia phones specs below.

Nokia Lumia 710 Specs

Nokia Lumia 710 has 3.7-inch ClearBlack TFT touch-screen display with 800 x 480 resolution. The phone’s measurement is 119 mm x 62.4 mm x 12.5 mm, weight only 126 gram. It is powered by 1.4 GHz single-core processor and 512 MB RAM, running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango mobile operating system. The internal storage is 8GB, no slot for micro-SD card.

Lumia 710 has a 5 MP camera with LED flash, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, micro-USB port. The Windows Phone uses a 1300mAh battery, claims to have a 3G talk time up to 7.6 hours or 6 hours video playback.

Nokia Lumia 710 is available in 2 colours: Black and White. The back cover is interchangeable to different colours: black, white, cyan, fuchsia, and yellow.

Nokia Lumia 800 Specs

Nokia Lumia 800 looks almost identical to Nokia N9, the first and last MeeGo phone. It has curved 3.7″ AMOLED ClearBlack glass touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution. Lumia 800 is using the the same 1.4 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM as Lumia 710. Both smartphones are running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango platform, have 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, micro-USB port.

Nokia Lumia 800 has 16 GB internal storage, which is 2x more than Lumia 710′s. The high-end phone has 8 megapixel camera with a f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens with dual LED flash. Both Windows Phone can capture 720p video capture at 30 frames-per-second.

Nokia Lumia video

Malaysia Nokia Lumia Prices

Now still 7 days to the Malaysia Nokia Lumia release date. We haven’t get the official recommended retail price yet. However, our friend at MalaysianWireless revealed that Malaysia Nokia Lumia 800 is RM1650 (~USD $546) and Nokia Lumia 710 is RM999 (~USD $330). We would say that’s a competitive pricing.

My two cents

Based on the specifications, the only major differences between Lumia 800 (high-end) and Lumia 710 (lower-cost) are the display (AMOLED vs TFT), internal storage space (16GB vs 8GB), and the phone camera (8MP vs 5MP). If you are not mobile-phone-photog, Lumia 710 can save you RM650 to buy other gadgets.

I’ll attend the Malaysia Nokia Lumia launch event. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the Nokia Lumia phones. Please follow me on twitter and facebook fan page for the upcoming updates.

The Internet has grown to become a major Malaysian industry and one that contributes more to Malaysia’s GDP than it does to the U.S or China, according to the “Online and Upcoming: The Internet’s Impact on Aspiring Countries” report, a new joint research by McKinsey & Company and Google.

The Internet contributes 4.1% to Malaysia’s GDP

The reports estimates that the Internet contributes 4.1% of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2010, or US $9.75 billion of the 2010 GDP of US$238 billion (World Bank [PDF] estimate) – placing Malaysia among the highest of the 30 fast-growing countries that the report highlights as crucial to the Internet’s future.

The government’s strong promotion of ICT has resulted in broadband penetration doubling between 2008 and 2010. Malaysia’s stock of secure Internet servers has also doubled per capita since 2007, giving it 25 times as many per capita as the rest of South Asia.

Malaysians spend most time online

According to the report, Malaysians now spend more time surfing the Internet than they spend consuming any other media, including watching television, listening to the radio, and reading newspaper. 1 out of every 3 minutes spent online is on social networking.

However, domestic online consumption is below average. Only 40% in Malaysia, compared to 70% average in other countries.

Malaysia business yet invest in Internet advertising

While Malaysian businesses sell more things online than many other countries with a similar wealth but they have yet to invest in Internet advertising. Only 1% of Malaysian businesses advertise online, which is bottom 10% of the 57 countries ranked for the index.

“Online and Upcoming: The Internet’s Impact on Aspiring Countries” report is the first of its kind to measure the contribution the Internet makes to economies.

The report suggests to decrease the cost of doing business on the Internet and encourage the growth of human and financial capital in order for SMEs to capture the full potential of the Internet in Malaysia.
