Ubuntu Linux 11.04 has been released with new look and new features. The popular linux operating system now use Unity as default desktop environment and it looks like Apple Mac OS X.Here are Ubuntu 11.04 new features and the similar features in existing Mac OS X:

The launcher

Ubuntu 11.04 has a launcher on the left-hand side of screen. It is where you put your favorite applications for quick access and keep track of your open windows.

Mac OS X: You get a dock which do the exactly same thing.

The dash

Clicking on the Ubuntu logo in the top-left corner of your screen, the new dash will appear. It allows you to search for application, files and folders.

Mac OS X: the spotlight search located in the top-right corner of your screen also allows you to do system wide search for applications, files and folders.

Workspaces

Ubuntu 11.04 Workspaces is a virtual desktop spaces for you to easily manage multiple windows and applications.

Mac OS X: the Spaces feature does exactly the same thing.

Download Ubuntu 11.04

Unlike Mac OS X, Ubuntu is a free operating system and you can install it on almost any computer. Do not need specified hardware. Download free Ubuntu here.

Video: What’s new in Ubuntu 11.04

The following is the Ubuntu 11.04 new features video:

My two cents

As an OS X user, I found Ubuntu 11.04 interface very familiar and I would love to install it in my non-Mac computer.

Wine and cabextract are required to be installed first(installation help). Then, download IEs4Linux and extract it. Open a terminal and run the “ies4linux” executable. Follow the instructions and you’re done.

Picasa for Linux runs the current Windows version of Picasa using a carefully tested version of Wine, an open-source implementation of the Windows application-programming interface (API). Wine runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix. But it’s not a Windows emulator; instead, it provides a Windows API middleware layer that enables Windows programs to run on Linux without the slowing effects of OS emulation or a virtual machine.

Microsoft can’t keep Linux geek in its lab?

Daniel Robbins, the founder and former chief architect of the Gentoo Linux project, has quit his job at Microsoft after only eight months, the software giant has confirmed.

“The reason I decided to leave had to do with my specific experiences working in Microsoft’s Linux Lab. Although I believe that the concept behind Microsoft’s Linux Lab is a good one, I wasn’t able to work at my full level of technical ability and I found this frustrating,” he said.

[Read News.com]

Robbins’s new job is the chief technical officer of ABC Coding Solutions, a company that provides informatin products and consulting services in the health industry.

My two cents

Working with others, especially big company like Microsoft is very different than working on own project. I guess Daniel Robbins did not get enough freedom to do what he wants to do.

Ubuntu CD delivery

I have ten sets, one of them is PowerPC version for my Apple iBook. If you want to try out Ubuntu and do not want to wait for the free CD delivery, I may send you a copy of Ubuntu CD by charging a shipping fee only. According to Pos Malaysia, the parcel rate within Peninsular Malaysia is RM2.50. Contact me for more information. (Yes, I am doing free job for Ubuntu.)

Order your own copies

If you want to receive multiple copies and don’t mind to wait, you may also order your free Ubuntu CD. The current CD version is Ubuntu 5.10. (ish!)

Thought

My elder brother is hard to believe that Ubuntu send free CDs, even without charging shipping fee! “Why do they want to do it?”, my brother asked.

I am going to test Ubuntu on Apple iBook later. Will write a first time Ubuntu user review.

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system that starts with the breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months), a clear focus on the user and usability (it should “Just Work”, TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.
