P1: The Best Home Wireless Broadband Provider

GoMobile Awards 2012 recognizes P1 for its outstanding achievements, contributions and innovations.

Kuala lumpur, Monday, 14 May 2012 – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”), Southeast Asia’s pioneer 4G service provider and subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad bagged the GoMobile Operators Awards 2012 as Best Home Wireless Broadband Provider of the year. Endorsed by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture Malaysia; and supported by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (“SKMM”), the prestigious recognition was presented to the Chief Executive Officer of P1 Michael Lai; by the Chairman of SKMM Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi during the glitzy ceremony.

“P1 users consume a monthly average of 17GB of data. That’s equivalent to 4800 songs (~3.5MB per song) or 17 DVD-quality movies (~1GB per movie) downloaded per month! Never before have Malaysians been able to relish in this rich media wireless internet experience using 4G technology at fantastic value for money. That’s why P1 is today the Best Home Wireless Broadband Provider!” the elated Lai announced. In 2008, the average monthly download of P1 users was only 7GB. This trend of internet usage explosion will persist among Malaysians and internet users all over the world in years to come alongside the perpetual data tsunami phenomena.

Lai further enthused, “The honour of this (GoMobile) award foremost goes to all P1 valued customers, committed employees, supportive business partners, the Malaysian government and our Board of Directors who have been marching with us in this amazing journey of P1. Their strong conviction in P1’s success is driving the company towards wonderful achievements that we’ve never imagined ourselves. Every award that P1 receives truly inspires us to serve our customers even better than before. With this latest addition, we look forward to continue making telecommunications great for Malaysians.”

Since its debut in 2008, P1 excited the Malaysian broadband industry with its cutting-edge 4G broadband service anchoring on three simple yet valuable propositions namely So Easy, So Affordable and So Fun. So Easy gets users connected to the internet via plug and play without fixed telephone lines. So Affordable offers superb value from as low as RM1.30 per day; and So Fun enables instant 4G WiFi for the whole family to enjoy, together with a nifty modem for out of home use.
P1’s range of services currently include 4G broadband with voice, fiber broadband, wireless internet leased line (BizPriority™), SIP-trunking voice and SMS solutions for businesses, organisations and the public sector.

To date, P1 is recognised in the hall of fame internationally and locally with the following accolades:

DNS Changer malware is a trojan that changes the infected computer’s DNS (domain name server) settings, in order to divert traffic to unsolicited, and potentially illegal sites.

In plain English: DNSChanger could trick you into visiting fake sites and steal your data and money.

You are recommended to check your computer for DNS Changer malware immediately! Simply visit http://dnschanger.detect.my/ (Malaysia).

If your system is clean then you will get a message in green background (see screenshot). Else, you will see a alert message in red background and visit the removal page to fix and remove DNSChanger malware.

Visit http://www.dcwg.org/ for more information.

RIM (Research In Motion) is showcasing the BlackBerry 10 Platform at the BlackBerry World 2012. The developer toolkit is available now for developers to build and test their apps in preparation for the BlackBerry 10′s launch in latter 2012.

Check out the BlackBerry 10 platform video below:

Visit BlackBerry Developer Blog for more toolkit information.

My two cents

It seems like RIM has given up physical keyboard and adopting more finger gestures and virtual keyboard. I like the word predictions on the virtual keyboard. It certainly helps to text faster.

Have you received your Google Drive invites yet? I got mine as soon as it was launched but many friends couldn’t get their Google Drive activated until few hours later.

Instead of a seamlessly upgrade from Google Docs to Google Drive, they receive a “Google Drive is coming soon” message and a “notify me” button.

Maybe it is due to massive user requests and Google have to roll out the new service gradually. You’ll get Google Drive sooner or latter.

My friend asked me if I have any “Google Drive invites”. I don’t see any thing like “send an invite” on Google Drive user interface as shown below:

BlackBerry OS 7 has been voted the most secure mobile OS for enterprise use, according to new research from Trend Micro (PDF).

The independent study evaluated today’s four leading mobile operating systems: BlackBerry OS, Apple iOS, Windows Phone, and Android.

The evolution areas are built-in security, authentication, data protection, device protection, application security, device wipe, mobile device management, corporate managed email, support for ActiveSync, security certifications, device firewall, virtualization.

BlackBerry OS has scored the best among the all. “Corporate-grade security and manageability make this platform the option of choice for the most stringent mobile roles.”, says report.

The 2nd place is Apple iOS. Windows Phone, though new in market, gained 3rd place. Android is the last, with lowest security and manageability in the segment.

Google launched Google Drive today with 5 GB free cloud file storage. Like other cloud storage such as Dropbox (referral link) and Microsoft’s Skydrive, Google Drive allows you to sync, access and share files on the web, on your computers, and mobile devices.

Google Drive video:

For example, when you save a file in Google Drive’s folder on your PC. It will automatically uploaded to Google Drive server. Then, you can access the file on the web, your mobile device and other authorized computer(s).

Google Drive has merged Google Docs that you can share files and edit them together. File revisions are automatically saved and keep for 30 days.

With the Google search power, you can search for content by keywords, filter by file type, and more. Google Drive can even recognize objects in image and text in scanned documents (OCR).

Google Drive is seamlessly integrated with Google products. You can easily share videos and pictures in Google Drive to Google+. Instead of attaching an email attachment, you can now send a link from Google Drive in Gmail.

Google Drive on the web supports over 30 file types that you can open right in your browser without the associated software installed on your computer.

Upgrade options

Every Google Drive account comes with 5GB free storage. Google Docs and files converted to Google Docs format do not take up storage space. You can choose to upgrade to 25GB for USD$2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or 1TB for $49.99/month. Up to 16TB available! Your Gmail storage will also expand to 25GB when you upgrade to a paid account.

Availability

Image: Google Drive folder on Mac OS X

Google Drive is available for PC and Mac, as well as Android devices. iPhone and iPad apps are coming soon in weeks. Linux users need to wait for Google’s future announcement…

My two cents

I am kind of disappointed that Google do not make iPhone/iPad app available at the launch date. (Maybe the app held by Apple?)

As far as I observed, the Google Drive app for Mac is only for you to upload files and access Google Drive files. It does not offer file sharing and revision view features like Dropbox app.

Google Drive is best when you work on the web: access files anywhere, open files without software, etc. Great for Chrome OS, the Google’s operating system.

Update: Some users do not get their Google Drive immediately. Read more here.
