Have you received your Google Drive invites yet? I got mine as soon as it was launched but many friends couldn’t get their Google Drive activated until few hours later.

Instead of a seamlessly upgrade from Google Docs to Google Drive, they receive a “Google Drive is coming soon” message and a “notify me” button.

Maybe it is due to massive user requests and Google have to roll out the new service gradually. You’ll get Google Drive sooner or latter.

Google launched Google Drive today with 5 GB free cloud file storage. Like other cloud storage such as Dropbox (referral link) and Microsoft’s Skydrive, Google Drive allows you to sync, access and share files on the web, on your computers, and mobile devices.

For example, when you save a file in Google Drive’s folder on your PC. It will automatically uploaded to Google Drive server. Then, you can access the file on the web, your mobile device and other authorized computer(s).

Google Drive has merged Google Docs that you can share files and edit them together. File revisions are automatically saved and keep for 30 days.

With the Google search power, you can search for content by keywords, filter by file type, and more. Google Drive can even recognize objects in image and text in scanned documents (OCR).

Google Drive is seamlessly integrated with Google products. You can easily share videos and pictures in Google Drive to Google+. Instead of attaching an email attachment, you can now send a link from Google Drive in Gmail.

Google Drive on the web supports over 30 file types that you can open right in your browser without the associated software installed on your computer.

Every Google Drive account comes with 5GB free storage. Google Docs and files converted to Google Docs format do not take up storage space. You can choose to upgrade to 25GB for USD$2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or 1TB for $49.99/month. Up to 16TB available! Your Gmail storage will also expand to 25GB when you upgrade to a paid account.

Google Drive is available for PC and Mac, as well as Android devices. iPhone and iPad apps are coming soon in weeks. Linux users need to wait for Google’s future announcement…

My two cents

I am kind of disappointed that Google do not make iPhone/iPad app available at the launch date. (Maybe the app held by Apple?)

As far as I observed, the Google Drive app for Mac is only for you to upload files and access Google Drive files. It does not offer file sharing and revision view features like Dropbox app.

Google Drive is best when you work on the web: access files anywhere, open files without software, etc. Great for Chrome OS, the Google’s operating system.

Google Chrome Beta now remembers the browser tabs you have on one device and make them accessible on all your other devices (computers, Android smartphone and tablets).

All you need to do is to install the latest Google Chrome Beta and signing in to Chrome to have your tabs (including tab navigation history) available on all your other devices.

To retrieve the tabs of other devices, simply click on the “Other devices” menu at the bottom of New Tab page. For Android smartphones, you need to use the Chrome for Android to get the saved tabs.

The new feature is great for you who have multiple devices (work, home, smartphone, tablet…). Never forget any browser tab, anymore!

Chrome extensions

1. Online dictionary – install Google Dictionary extension, and simple double click a word to get an instant pop-up definition.
2. Voice input – you can speak to input text using several Chrome extensions like Oweb Voice Input and Speechify.
3. Link Chrome to your phone – Install Chrome to Phone extension and the Android app to send links from your computer to your phone.
4. Make phone calls in browser – with Google Voice extension, it will identify phone numbers on website and place calls and text messsages directly from your browser.
5. Easily keep browser extensions updated with Secure Browsing extension from Google.
6. Internet Explorer in Chrome – Visit websites that only work on IE? Use IE Tab extension to open the website in IE emulator inside Chrome.

Chrome keyboard shortcuts

1. Move the cursor to the omnibox using Ctrl+L (Cmd+L on Mac) without touching your mouse.
2. Press “Backspace” or “Alt+Left Arrow” to go backward, and “Shift+Backspace” or “Alt+Right Arrow” to go forward. (On Mac, use Cmd key instead of Alt.)
3. Paste text using “Ctrl+Shift+V” (Cmd+Shift+V) to paste copied content in plain text, without any formatting.
4. keyboard shortcuts to navigate between tabs:
   • Ctrl+Tab – Cycle to the next tab.
   • Ctrl+Shift+Tab – Cycle to the previous tab.
   • Ctrl+1 through 8 (windows only) – Jump to the tab whose placement on the strip cprresponds with the key, with Ctrl+9 taking you to the last tab.
5. Open new tabs by dragging links and text to the tab bar to open a new tab.
6. You can open a new background tab (search or URL) from the omnibox using “Alt+Enter” (Opt+Enter on Mac).
7. Handle links like a pro.
   • Open link in new tab: hit middle mouse or “Ctrl+Left click”
   • Open link in new window: “Shift+Click”
   • Open link in new tab and swich to that tab immediately: “Shift+Middle Click” (or Shift+Ctrl+Click)
   • Save content of a link: “Alt+Click”
8. Highlight an address, right click, and select “Search google.com for [address]”, and Chrome will automatically pull up a map to that address.
9. Easily bookmark a site by clicking on the Star next to the omnibox or press Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on Mac). Ctrl+Shift+B (Cmd+Shift+B on Mac) to toggle bookmarks bar on and off.

Google has introduced the Chrome for Android (beta) for Android 4.0 (ICS), which brings speed and simplicity of desktop Chrome to Android phone and tablet. It enables you to sync bookmarks and tabs across devices.

Chrome for Android Features:

1. Browse fast with accelerated page loading, scrolling, and zooming
2. Search and navigate directly from the omnibox
3. Open and switch between unlimited tabs in an easy-to-view stack
4. Sign in to Chrome to sync your bookmarks and view tabs you have opened on your computer
5. Send pages from desktop Chrome to your smartphone or tablet with one click and read them on the go, even if you’re offline
6. Browse privately in Incognito mode

Not support Adobe Flash!

On the side note, Adobe has confirmed that Chrome for Android does not support Flash:

…Adobe is no longer developing Flash Player for mobile browsers, and thus Chrome for Android Beta does not support Flash content. Flash Player continues to be supported within the current Android browser.

No surprise there as Adobe announced in November 2011 that Adobe is no longer developing Flash Player for mobile browsers.

Android phone seller should stop highlight “supporting flash” as a feature in 2012! It’s HTML5 now.

Based on current 2320 user reviews, the app gets a average rating of 4.3 out of 10. Not suitable to set as default browser for the moment…

My two cents

I like the sync features for bookmarks and view tabs, and the ability to send pages from desktop Chrome. I believe that Chrome will soon replace Android browser and become the default web browser for Android platform.

Chrome for desktop is currently the 2nd most popular web browser in the World.

In this article, you will learn how to create a Google+ Page badge for your website using Google Developers badge configuration tool.

If you haven’t created a Google+ page yet, follow this link to create one.

First of all, you need to get your Google+ Page ID, which is a 21-digit string. Unfortunately, Google+ yet offer easy-to-remember URL shortnames like Facebook Pages.

After you got your Google+ Page ID, goto badge configuration tool on Google Developers and paste your G+ page ID under “Set your Google+ page link”.

As soon as you submit your Google+ Page ID, you will get a badge preview. There are 6 options: standard badge, small badge, small icon, medium icon, large icon, and no badge (huh?). You can also further customize your badge’s language and advanced options.

At the bottom of the page, you get the badge code which you will copy and paste into your site to add Google+ Page badge. The code splits into 2 parts, the first tag is to be placed in the part of your web page. The latter tag is where you want to show the badge.

Whether you like it or not, Google has added Google+ factors in Google search results. I’d recommend every website owner create a Google+ Page and add the badge to your website. It is easy.
