Yahoo! Malaysia has launched YOUREKA!, an online and offline treasure hunting contest.

All you need to do is visit Yahoo! Malaysia or Youreka website and spot a colored ticket.

Yahoo! YOUREKA!: I found a red ticket. In fact, you could NEVER miss it! It’s so easy!

Register online and you’ll receive a confirmation e-mail that you can exchange for a corresponding Tag to redeem a special premium from Yahoo! and Adidas.

If you are lucky, you may end up exchanging for a very limited purple tag that gives you a chance to participate in the YOUREKA! Finale Event and stand a chance to win an Apple iPod Touch and Apple Macbook Air!

The first YOUREKA! hunt pit-stop is at Adidas. Red tag holders will receive 10% off Adidas products and free Adidas premiums.

Date: 31 October (Saturday) & 1st November (Sunday), 2009

YOUREKA! is too easy to participate and I don’t think it is a “treasure hunting” contest.

Everyone who visit the YOUREKA! could spot the colored ticket and claim your tag, then get discount from the selected shops. That’s no brainer.

By the way, the web design of Yahoo! YOUREKA! reminded me about The Million Dollar Homepage.

Download Full Yahoo! Messenger Standalone Installer

Yahoo Messenger is one of the most popular instant messengers of today. When you download Yahoo! Messenger(YM), you actually only download a small size installer which will download the full size Yahoo Messenger when it is loaded.

But, the YM installer restarts the installation when your line is unstable or the YM download site is busy. It is rather irritating. I once spent 30 minutes to see it keeps restarting the installation!

Here is the solution! We can skip the small YM installer and directly download the full Yahoo! Messenger standalone installer.

Microsoft Offer to Buy Yahoo! for $44.6 billion

Microsoft made an offer to acquire Yahoo! for $44.6 billion USD cash and stock on Feb 1, 2008.

Microsoft offers to pay Yahoo! shareholders $31 a share, which represents a 62% premium from where Yahoo stock closed on Thursday.

“We are very, very confident this is the right path for Microsoft and for Yahoo!,” said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive.

Microsoft allows the Yahoo! shareholders to elect to receive cash or a fixed number of shares of Microsoft common stock. Yahoo has acknowledged receipt of the offer and its board would evaluate the proposal “carefully and promptly”.

According to comScore, Google owns over 58.4% of the U.S. market, Yahoo has 22.9% and Microsoft is only 9.8%.

Yahoo! has a hard time this year and plans 1,000 job cuts in February 2008. The total returns of Yahoo dropped 32% in 2007.

Yahoo! Photos is Closing

I have received an email from Yahoo! which inform me about the closing of Yahoo! Photos. Heck, I don’t even remember I have a Yahoo Photos account!

We’re sorry. Yahoo! Photos is closing on October 18, 2007 so we are no longer accepting new accounts or allowing users to upload photos if you don’t already have photos in your account. We’ve decided to focus all our efforts on Yahoo!’s other photo service called Flickr – the award winning photo sharing community that has been called “completely addictive”. Merdeka Day Logos from Google and Yahoo

In conjunction to the 50th National Day of Malaysia, both Google and Yahoo designed special Merdeka Day logo for their Malaysia local search sites. They are believed to be the first occasional logos from the big brands for Malaysians.

24 Hours of Flickr, Kuala Lumpur

Yahoo SmartAds Allows Customizable Ads

News.com reported that Yahoo launched a new advertising product called SmartAds, which allows advertisers to offer ads that are customized according to the web surfer’s demographics, geographic and online activities.

With Yahoo SmartAds, the advertiser can show different ads for targeted web surfers, example: A SmartAds ad shows your local car dealer when you search for car along with prices, and ad background is targeted to your age range… all of these are done on the fly!

How does Yahoo SmartAds works?

Yahoo SmartAds combines Yahoo’s demographic, geographic and behavioral-targeting capabilities with a new patent-pending creative ad assembly platform that allows the company’s ad system to create customized ads in real time.

Yahoo will get different backgrounds, logos and other features from the creative agencies that can be reconfigured with ad copy based on who is seeing the ad and what they are interested in.

My two cents

Yahoo SmartAds is behavioral targeting ads, which allows advertisers to have better focus ads to targeted web surfers. And, a web surfer will get more relevant ads. We don’t have a live example now, but I think it is a “win-win-win” program for Yahoo, advertiser, and surfer.

By the way, you can predict your website’s demographics using Microsoft adCenter Demographics Prediction.

Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista

I like the clean and flexible user interface of Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista. Instant Messenger should be simple and easy to use. Yahoo does it well this time.
