WordPress 3.3, named “Sonny”, has been released. The new version features easier media upload, cleaner dashboard design, better co-editing, and new Tumblr Importer.

Easier media upload

WordPress 3.3 now makes it simpler to upload files with only only 1 upload button and auto detects the file type of your uploaded file(s). You simply drag-and-drop files into the upload area to upload your files. The uploader also added support for .RAR and .7z compressed file formats.

Cleaner Dashboard design

WordPress Admin dashboard now use flyout menus, instead of previous drop-down menus. Flyout menus efficiently speed up navigation and reduce mouse clicks. The WordPress Admin bar and the Dashboard header has been combined into single toolbar with submenus (if available). iPad or tablets users will found certain WordPress dashboard screens are looking better on their tablets.

Other improved features are better co-editing that you’ll only get co-editing warning if another person is still on the editing screen; Now you can import your Tumblr to WordPress using the Tumblr Importer. Imported Tumblr posts will be matching to WordPress post formats.

WordConf Asia 2011 to be held in Malaysia on 14th May 2011, 9am to 5pm. It is a conference that focus on everything WordPress, the world famous open source blog publishing platform powered by PHP and MySQL.The event will be held at Royale Bintang, Kuala Lumpur on 14th May 2011, 9AM to 5:30PM. WordPress 3.1 is now available for free download. The code name “Reinhardt” is named in honor of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Existing WordPress user can update from within the WordPress dashboard.WordPress 3.1 is a great update from previous WordPress version, there are many features and bug fixes. Here are some of the WordPress 3.1 noticeable new features (and how to enable them):

1. Blue colour admin scheme

Say “bye-bye” to gray color admin panel. The admin color scheme is located under Users -> Your Profile. (took me half hour to find out!)

Already familiar by WordPress.com users, the admin bar allows quick access to user’s profile, add new post, moderate comments, and change blog design.

2. Internal linking

Now it is easier to link to your previous posts when you are editing a new post. The insert link window added previous post search for easy linking.

3. Post formats

WordPress 3.1 is the 1st version that officially build-in support for different post formats, like the already popular Tumblr micro-blog. The support posts types are: aside, gallery, link, image, quote, status, video, audio, and chat. Post formats needs to be enabled in your theme.

My two cents

The user interface changes do not mean too much to me, I do not write blog posts online (I use a desktop blog editor). Instead, I care more about the bug fixes and performance improvements.

I like the post formats feature. It would bring people back to their blogs from Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms. Currently, I am using Posterous for my private personal blog. I might migrate it to WordPress if it hasenough mobile support.

After you changed the WordPress permalink structure, it is important to make sure all old links are redirected to the new links, so that you do not lose your visitors who follow the old links.

I use Google Webmaster Tools to check the 404 File Not Found Error for missing page links. There were hundreds of missing links when I checked. Not good.

After a search on WordPress Plugin Directory, I found the “Change Permalink Helper“. It is a simple plugin (with no configuration) but works very well.

If a link to your site is not found, the plugin will find the post according to the slug and make a permanent redirect (301) to the new location.

Note: The database search for missing posts will add some workload to your site but, trust me, it is worth every single bit!

Now, don’t you agree that these blog comments are very encouraging? Whenever I feel down or suffer “blogger’s block”, I will read the spam comments. I almost don’t want to delete them from the “Pending Comments” list.

Here is a Quick Way to mass-delete all pending comments at once

Wait. Since these comments only say good words and no link, how do I know it is spam comment?

1. They are general comments, not related to the blog post.
2. They include spam link in the author’s URL field.
3. And, the “Name” field is not a person’s name.

Sometimes your WordPress blog might get attacked by spam bots and get thousands of comments that passed your blog’s spam filter but WordPress put them in “pending comments”. Mark pending comment as spam batch-by-batch would take you couple hours. Nobody wants to do that.

If you are a geek, you know you can delete all the WordPress pending comments with a single SQL query using phpMyAdmin or any other SQL client:

DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = '0'

That’s easy!

But, I don’t know SQL!

For other WordPress bloggers, I found a simple plugin called “Delete Pending Comments” that just do one thing.. well, delete pending comments.

After installing the plugin, you would get a “Delete Pending Comments” menu item under “Comments” menu in WordPress Admin.

To confirm you want to delete all the pending comments, you have to type the text

“I am sure I want to delete all pending comments and realize this can’t be undone”

then click “Delete Pending Comments” button.

Hooray! All pending comments are gone! Hope you find this tips useful. Let me know if you have other tips to be shared.
