Challenge Three Column Kubrick Template

Filed in: WordPress — May 1st, 2005

I am challenging myself to create a three column kubrick WordPress template / theme.

I planned for 3 column layout and dig in Internet and compiled a list of three column WordPress templates. However, I still feel the kubrick theme is the best. I searched for three columns kubrick template, but disappointed. Surprised :!:

Who?
Since nobody(anyone?) create it, then I will make it and have it available for all(if and only if I succeed…).

What?
The template will look somewhat like Engadget and Gizmodo. Content at the most left and two columns at the right. It will NOT 800×600 resolution friendly(just like Engadget), because I do not wish to sacrify the content width. (P/S: I, myself, use 800×600 resolution)

How?
Basically, extend the width of current default kubrick template, including the width of image files. Add additional column code into the template sidebar, can be done using php include.

Sound simple huh? Hopefully.

When?
I will start working on it now and hopefully done in next 24 hours.

The three columns kubrick theme is available for download now.

hey, i think something is wrong with either your post slug or your auto ping system. cuz whenever i clicked your blog from PPS, it just will get to an “Error 404 – Not Found” i guess it’s not too difficult to make a 3 column design right? i mean engadget’s one is just simple and minimalistic design.
i guess u missed out Viewfinder Design.
i think theirs is simple and minimalistic yet it’s cool. try using that if it matches your favour… take care and cant wait to see your whole new look.

To change to 3 columns blogging style is what I’m thinking too, because I feel the default Kubrick template wastes quite a lot of spaces.

Too bad I do not have free time at the moment, but I think I’ll search for some 3 column templates and start modifying from there.

Anyway, wish you luck in changing your current template style into 3 columns.

Hope to hear the good news from you. :)

    Hi LcF,

Thanks for this great template. I’ve been using it for just over a week and thought I had no problems. Last night however I discovered that in IE6 the specific posts are degenerating to a single column right hand column, although they’re O.K. in Firefox.

They’re also O.K. in IE6 on the home page.

I’m not a programmer and wonder if you’ve a fix for this?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

I wondered if the comment form might be too wide and somehow affecting the margins to the right of it?

Is there some way I can slip you a fiver so you can fix it, at least for my pages. I want to write about the 3 column template and your excellent website as part of tomorrows entry on my site.

Not that I would write anything derogatory if you haven’t time to sort it out!

But it would be nice if you could!

Question? Can we make the main column not fixed but flexible so that it will expand depending on the screen resolution?

    Hi Tom,

Yes I agree the template works well for scaredmonkeys ~ I have a slight quibble that’s probably to do with WordPress, rather than LcF’s template.

I’ve found that three entries on the homepage about right, but when I set this I also set three entries as the default setting for the monthly archive summaries, where 31 entries would be more suitable.

Does anyone know if ther’s away of changing the archive default entries without also changing the default for the homepage?

If so I’d be pleased to hear from them.

    Hi LcF,

I very quickly uploaded the file to the plug in folder, but it didn’t seem to be recognised. Do I need to give it a special name, upload it somewhere else, or paste it into the index somewhere?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

Stephen Bray: you submited an off topic comment. :)

I do not personally test the plugin yet. I did the search in wordpress support and it seems to work for others.

I gather IE7 is currently in Beta 1 for developers, and the shortly to be released Beta 2 version has improved CSS 2 capabilities.

Do you think that Microsoft are doing enough to ensure the 3 column Kubrick renders properly?

If IE7 has the same CSS capabilities as Mozilla then the 3 column kubrick theme will rendered properly.

It is a good news for web designer, they don’t need to pull their hairs for cross browser compatibility problems. :)
