Choosing the Right Fonts

Filed in: Web Development — July 2nd, 2004

Is your website using the right fonts for your site visitors?

- People tend not to prefer Times/Times New Roman for aesthetics OR legibility. (Funny that this is the default font used for most word processing programs and web browsers!)

- Arial, Verdana, and Georgia are good. (Tahoma is also quite legible, but may not be on everyone’s system.)

- Older people may think Arial is easier to read.

- Kids like “fun” fonts.

How come you didn’t write anything about embedding fonts on the web. I’ve done it, it’s not that hard, you can see it on my blog. But I didn’t use it for my main blog because I can’t find fonts that is nice and readable.

The choice of Arial is not bad ; I always find that better than Times New Roman and other serif fonts.
Personally I choose Verdana whever possible because I find it even more readable.

anthony, it was not lcf who stated that times new romans is not
liked. that was a quoted text from lcf taken from the sitepoint.com site.
didn’t you notice, whenever there is a quoted text from lcf, you
will notice a grey bar by the side on the left?

anyway, i don’t quite like times new romans… just because it is
    too common. i like tahoma.

Courier fonts from those mechanical typewriter days are sleep inducers. Times New Roman resmbles
a little of that but not that much.
