Domain Name Price to be Raised

Filed in: Web Development — October 13th, 2007

Verisign and other domain registries will be raising the rates for registrars on October 15th, 2007. The top-level domains being effected are .com, .net, .org, .info .biz, .us and .name.

The old domain price to a registrar was $6.20 USD, new price is $6.62 USD. Most registrars will pass the cost directly to their customers.

If you have many domain names, you should renew them now to save money. Do confirm with your domain registrars whether they will increase the price or not. Generally, if you are paying much for domain name (e.g. $15 USD) now, the price will remain.

How many domain names do you have? Will you renew them now?

I have 48 domain names and all of them still have either 5 or 6 years to expiry date. So not renewing them at the moment. I use NameCheap.com and they are raising the price on 14 Oct 2007 from $8.88 to $9.29 but because of the number of domains, they gave me a permanent discount coupon (10%) to be used for renewals and new registrations.

The latest increase in domain name is negligible if your sites are making money. Moreover there are more important things to be focused on rather than this small amount when you’re running an online business.

    Just my personal opinion.

    50+ domain names.

Most of them in namecheap, slowly transfer all of them to domainsite, which still cost only USD$6.99. Renewal is USD$7.99.

When I bought my hosting, the domain is given to me free of charge, will this price raise affects me?

@Wayne Liew: it depends to your hosting provider whether they want to pass the cost to their customers or not. Personally, I will bear the cost. :)

Luckily I got mine before the price increase. And it was one month NOT too late. ;)
Had my domain name less than one month before prices increased! Lucky, but renewal fees sure go up next year when it is time for renewal. :(

I think I am still fine with the small increase since I only have one domain. However, I am planning to register one more~

NameCheap, whom I have used for years as a registrar, just raised their prices to $9.29, up from 8.88 – not fun (especially when you have hundreds of domains)

  • Mr. Bear

Why the price increase if it is just a string of text own by someone?
That does the $$ paid goes into?
    Me curious.

@Mr. Bear: part of the money goes to ICANN and Verisign

Well, it’s only a few cents difference. But that could also be a lot of difference if someone has 10 or more domains. Maybe it’s time to look for a cheaper alternative…maybe DomainSite? FYI, DomainSite’s Hidden Whois service is much cheaper than NameCheap :)
