Google AdSense Testing New “Ads by Google Link”

Filed in: Adsense Tips, Make Money Online — December 12th, 2006

A reader told me that he discovered Google AdSense is testing a new “Ads by Google” link by replacing the “Google” with a Google logo.

Google AdSense Testing New "Ads by Google Link"
Left: “Ads by Google” link with Google logo. Right: text link for current adsense ad

My two cents

I think the new link would decrease click-through rate for the ads. The Google logo means telling site visitors, “Hey! Look here! I am advertisement by Google!”.

It is good for Google because the link lead visitors to a sign up page for AdSense and AdWords. But it might not be a good idea for fellow AdSense publishers, unless we can get referral fees via the link.

Yes, I agree that showing the logo will somehow decrease the CTR and increase the Ad Blindness. I wonder why Google doesn’t remove the Ads by Google.

Also, if you visit Digg.com, you can see that the “Ads by Google” is nearly transparent!

Google is tightening the ring around low and average earning publishers and ignoring their interests because they know they have a very strong monopoly in the contextual ads market. Not only this will decrease CTR, but it will also reduce the transparency of the ads, something that might get the ads to be even more annoying to publishers.

Once the logo is implemented, I guess tutorials regarding masking Google ads into content would be useless by then.

Cool! With this, google ads will show up better!
    Nice information Malaysian-student!

This is certainly not a good news…. once implemented, the contextual ads would looks ugly. Might spoiled our webpage’s looks.

This could possibly lower the click-through rates as the logo makes the ads look more like, well, ads. And they may also screw up some blending techniques if your ads background it not white. Let`s just pray it is only a test. If they go on with this our CTR will suck big time!
