Google is Switching to AMD Processor

Google dumps Intel and is going for AMD Opteron processor.

Google, which has more than 200,000 servers, has started to buy Advanced Micro’s Opteron processors with almost all new purchases, Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Edelstone said.

AMD Opteron is 64-bit processor for servers and workstations. AMD claims that it is the world’s highest performing processor for 1-8P x86 servers and workstations.

    I do not believe this to be true. Finally Intel has completely stamped out all other competition, and it’s a common fact that Intel has always been much more stable and faster than AMD. Here in South Africa hardly any suppliers are supplying AMD, becuase you can get a much better system for very little more.

    AMD is fast when it comes to single processing, that’s why gamers prefer AMD.

    Intel is much faster with more than one thread/process, thus for general office work Intel is the way.

    With games becoming more resource intensive, AMD is even loosing that battle, as Intel is the OBVIOUS way to go.

    If Google needs a system which is extremely fast with one single process, then I understand the move, but that is highly unlikely. Even though that many servers could be configured very modular (ie, one server only does SQL queries for E-Mail, another only does DNS etc), but that is highly unlikely. With the amount of users Google or Gmail has, the chances of less than 200 people accessing the same resource at one given time, UNLIKELY!
