Make a Living from Blogging?

Filed in: Make Money Online, Weblog — February 15th, 2006

An interesting interview session on “make a living from blogging” conducted by Wired News with Harold Davis, the author of two Google books. His latest book is Google Advertising Tools.

Wired News: Can a blogger realistically expect to make a living from blogging?
Harold Davis: There are people who make a living blogging, but if you’re going to do it on your own, you darn well better have a ton of traffic. There are 10 million lonely bloggers and people probably only read a few thousand. If you’re going to make serious money off this, it’s a serious time commitment.

My two cents

“Are you still blogging full time?”, some friends asked me. Maybe people don’t think a full time blogger can survive for a long time?

I, Liew Cheon Fong, am the one of the very first full time blogger in Malaysia. I am quite proud of it. :)

[Thanks, David]

On the Adsense topic, I would be very cautious. We got a generic note from Google that ‘click fraud’ had been detetected on our account and that our account was suspended without recourse. We tried to find out the problem and sent a copy of our web logs showing no such unusual activity. Then we received another reponse which would not reveal any information but they claimed that they did have proof but, due to ‘client confidentiality, could not reveal any of it.

This story has been repeated to us by at least 30 of our readership over the last week or two. It would appear that this mostly happened when people were starting to get, or had a sudden boost, income from the Google Adsense program.

This doesn’t strike me as a good way to do business. The moral here is ‘beware’ and don’t rely too much on Google Adsense just in case the same happens to your account to!
