No Apple Mac Domain Name Allowed?

Filed in: Weblog — September 5th, 2005

While I yet decide on the domain name for my new Apple blog, I came accross Apple Copyright and Trademark Guidelines.

9. Domain Names: You may not use an identical or virtually identical Apple trademark as a second level domain name.

Does it means that I cannot use any domain name with “apple” or “mac” word? However, I see many websites with the the words in their domain names…

Currently, the poll result is 50/50. Half voted for AppleBeginner.com, another half voted for Mac-Switcher.com.

I send an email to Apple.com to ask about the domain name trademark issue. While waiting for the reply, maybe I need to think for other names as backup. Suggestions?

I believe you can use the “mac” name but not apple. Because “mac” is their OS and Apple is a registered company. If you use “Apple” visitors might think you affiliate with them.

it means you may not use APPLE, or IPOD, or OSX, or TIGER, or any other direct copies, however adding another word to this means that it is not a direct copy, and the restriction does not apply to these

I avoid to make the site become too personal, that include the domain name.

we try to avoid numeric in domain names because it make confuse when we speak it to others. Why “Mat” ?

Mac does not really mean its a name on the rue sense. Usually it is a suffix to mean ‘son of’.

Typo error. Meant to type ‘MacSwitcher’ instead of “MatSwitcher’. In the case of ‘MacSwitcher’, being one-word will not be subjected to affiliation to Mac domain name.

LowEndMac.com is a very famous Mac site, and they’ve been operating for many years…

I think there should be no problem with Mac word.

Since you’ve already contact them it’s worth to wait the response.

BTW, I suggest you not to mention whatever domain name you have in mind, coz other people will register it first.. just my 2 cents
