Filed in: Downloads, Open Source — October 21st, 2005

Five years after Sun donated the source of StarOffice to the open-source community, OpenOffice.org 2.0 (OOo) is released on 20 October, 2005. There are many new features in OpenOffice.org 2.0.

OpenOffice.org Writer

OpenOffice.org 2.0 is an open, feature-rich multi-platform office productivity suite. The user interface and the functionality is very similar to other products in the market like Microsoft Office or Lotus SmartSuite, but in contrast to these commercial products OpenOffice.org is absolutely free.

 Use OpenOffice.org

Thought

Unlike version 1.x, OOo 2.0 user interface looks very similar to MS Office. Current Ms Office users should not have problem with it. By the way, OOo 2.0 still lack of grammar checker like MS Office and AbiWord. Also, OOo 2.0 for Mac OS X is not ready yet…

OOo 2.0, this is something I’ve been eagerly waiting for. Undeniably a great free alternative to MS Office. Anyone trying to minimize the cost of legal software installed in PC, should seriously consider this.

I got many complaints about OOo 1.x is not stable and it is the main reason they do not switch to OOo. I think OOo 2.x should fixed the problem already (I am on Mac).
