If Malaysians Pick the Oscar 2011 Winners…

Academy Award statuette

If Malaysians to determine the Oscar (February 27, 2011) winners by Google searches, the 83rd Academy Award for Best Film would go to Black Swan, Natalie Portman would pick up the Leading Actress prize and James Franco would cause one of the biggest upsets in Oscars history by snatching the Best Actor statuette from the hotly-tipped Colin Firth! Here are the results from Google Insight (Malaysia) for the past 30 days:

Online buzz for “Best Film”

Online buzz for “Best Actress”

The results are one-sided.

“This year’s favorites to win the Oscar Best Picture award are The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Social Network, True Grit, and The Fighter, but Google’s Insights for Search tool shows that people are searching for Black Swan much more than any other film, which goes against the predictions of many movie critics,” said Derek Callow, Head of Marketing for Google Southeast Asia. “We think that Insights for Search captures popular opinion of these movies, rather than professional critics’ assessments. It’ll be interesting to see who will win when the awards are broadcast this coming Monday local time!”

I won’t be watching the Oscars. But I have a sneeky feeling that “True Grit” might just be the dark horse for best picture and best actor.
