Pain of Dialup Users

Filed in: Web — March 28th, 2004

Read an article on TheRegister.com about the problem for a dialup connection user to update their operating system.

Personally, I have experienced the same things before switched to broadband connection(Tmnet’s Streamyx). The patches and updates installation is the most painful step after a clean install of OS!

From the article, we know that the broadband user is less than 40% of total Internet user in US. As far as I know, South Korea has highest popularity of broadband user. If I am not wrong, it is somewhere between 80% to 90%! How about in Malaysia?

By the way, I wonder how many home user know and willing to spend few hours to download and install the patches? As far as I know, most users does not care about it. That is one of the reason some virus worms can spread globally in one day, even the patch for it has been released months before its strike.

Hmm… It is one of the reason the coming version of Windows will implement FORCE updates.

There are 4.9 Million Telephone Lines (ie Copper lines) in Malaysia and currently there are 120,000 Streamyx users. That will make 120000/4900000 = 2.5%. Man, as broadband comes around, so thus the complex issues of patching. At the end of the day we will always have only 50% of the bandwidth ;-(

I have never update my windows too. But still I haven’t been infected by those popular worms. Just need to be careful.
